During their meeting, the two ministers stated that the recent Russian troop rallies on the border with eastern Ukraine are “a threat to security in Europe and Ukraine's sovereignty”.

– A long time we have been able to observe a gradual build-up of Russian forces and activity levels both in the Arctic and in the Baltic Sea and in the Black Sea. Large complex exercises where military units consisting of thousands of soldiers are moved over large distances are examples of the increasing Russian military presence, said Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist.

In the new agreement on bilateral defense cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine, which replaces a previous protocols from 2001, include the exchange of information and cooperation on military training.

– The people of Ukraine need our solidarity and must be able to independently choose their country's security policy future. Our goal is to create peace and stability together, said Peter Hultqvist.

During the meeting, he and Oleksii Reznikov also discussed Belarus' use of third-world immigrants against the EU.

– We take it the actions of the Belarusian regime towards Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, and consequently towards the whole of the EU and Europe, in all seriousness. The Belarusian regime uses people in a very cynical way to achieve its political goals and to divide Europe, said Hultqvist.

In connection with his visit to Sweden, Oleksii Reznikov also meets Foreign Minister Ann Linde and representatives of the Swedish Parliament, and visits, among other things, the Fourth Naval Battle Flotilla and the Amphibious Regiment in Berga.
