Qualcomm wird mit dem Anfang letzter Woche vorgestellten Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 eine Reihe wichtiger Top-Smartphones des kommenden Jahres antreiben. Einen ersten Eindruck zur Leistung des Chips gibt es jetzt mit Benchmarks auf einem Referenzgerät von Qualcomm. Vor allem die GPU unter Verwendung von Vulkan legt gehörig zu.
Benchmarks auf dem Referenzgerät von Qualcomm
Benchmarks des Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 wurden auf einem sogenannten QRD, also einem Qualcomm Reference Device durchgeführt. Dabei handelt es sich um ein von Qualcomm entwickeltes Smartphone, das im Großen und Ganzen einem regulären Smartphone entspricht, aber mit Tools und Ports zu Analysezwecken bestückt ist und das in puncto Verarbeitung wohl keine Qualitätskontrolle eines OEMs bestehen würde. Die QRDs sehen immer ein wenig so aus, als wären sie wenige Stunden zuvor noch schnell händisch zusammengebaut worden. Über die letzten Jahre haben die QRDs aber ein eher normales Format angenommen, nachdem Qualcomm in frühen Benchmark-Sessions dieser Art noch riesige Trümmer an die Tester ausgab.
Fokus auf CPU- und GPU-Leistung
ComputerBase hat auf dem QRD des Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 eine Reihe von Benchmarks ausgeführt, die primär CPU- und GPU-Leistung betreffen. Eine neue Snapdragon-Generation ist natürlich weit mehr als das, da etwa Messungen für KI, Audio, 5G, Wi-Fi und andere Bereiche der Plattform ausgeklammert wurden. Bekannte Benchmarks wie Geekbench, 3DMark, PCMark oder GFXBench liefern aber Ergebnisse in zwei Disziplinen, die sich vor allem mit bislang verfügbaren Plattformen gut vergleichen lassen. Die hier zum Vergleich präsentierten Werte stammen aus aktuellen Smartphones respektive aus dem iPad Pro und MacBook Pro für den M1. Die gleichen Chips sind mehrfach vertreten, um die Unterschiede bei unterschiedlichen OEMs aufzuzeigen.
Neue Kryo-CPU liefert erwartete Zugewinne
In puncto CPU-Leistung gibt es im Geekbench einen kleineren Sprung zu verzeichnen, der durch den Wechsel auf die neuen Kerne von ARM auch so erwartet worden war. Bei der Single-Core-Leistung attestiert der Benchmark dem Chip einen Zugewinn um 10 Prozent im Vergleich zum Snapdragon 888, sodass Apples A13 Bionic nur noch 7 statt 18 Prozent davor landet. Ein Performance-Kern des aktuellen A15 Bionic aus der iPhone-13-Serie liegt jedoch beeindruckende 40 Prozent vor dem Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Die Multi-Core-Leistung des Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 schiebt das SoC allerdings am A13 Bionic vorbei und (nur) 4 Prozent vor den Snapdragon 888. Apples A14 Bionic und A15 Bionic bleiben allerdings schneller und mit mehr Performance-Kernen als die Smartphone-Chips setzen sich M1 und M1 Pro deutlich vom Feld ab. Die Prozessoren aus dem iPad Pro und MacBook Pro 14" (Test) zeigen, wohin in den nächsten zwei Jahren die Reise bei Qualcomm mit den neuen Nuvia-Kernen gehen soll.

Im nur für Android verfügbaren PCMark 3.0 markiert der Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 die neue Speerspitze und landet auch vor dem Exynos 2100 von Samsung, der hierzulande in der Galaxy-S21-Serie verbaut wird. In diesem Test lag im Hause Qualcomm zuletzt noch der ältere, aber mit hohen Taktraten betriebene Snapdragon 870 vorne. Auch der Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 setzt mit knapp 3,0 GHz für den Prime-Core (Cortex-X2) und 2,5 GHz auf den Performance-Cores (Cortex-A710) auf höhere Taktraten und schiebt sich in Kombination mit der neuen Architektur sicher auf den ersten Platz.
Auch im Browser-Benchmark „JetStream 2“ ist mit 14 Prozent zum Snapdragon 888 ein Evolution zu verzeichnen, die annähernd für Parität zum A13 Bionic sorgt. Messen muss sich Qualcomm aber mit dem A15 Bionic, der mit 30 Prozent Vorsprung zumindest derzeit uneinholbar vorne liegt.
Adreno-730-GPU mit Fokus auf Vulkan
In puncto CPU wird Qualcomm noch so lange auf die Fortschritte von ARM limitiert sein, bis das Unternehmen mit der neuen Nuvia-CPU im „Snapdragon 8x“ ein neues Kapitel aufschlagen kann, das den ersehnten Anschluss an Apple erzählen soll. Selbst in der Hand hat es Qualcomm allerdings bei der Adreno-GPU, die extern zwar keinen Namen mehr hat, intern aber als neue 700-Familie geführt wird. Tools lesen die GPU auf dem QRD des Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 als Adreno 730 aus.
Mehr ALUs, mehr TMUs und mehr Takt
Mit der Adreno 730 feiert eine neue GPU-Architektur Premiere, erklärte Qualcomm zum Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021. Details dazu behält das Unternehmen eigentlich unter Verschluss, dieses Jahr war man aber redselig, jedoch nicht auf der großen Bühne, sondern erst im Nachgang zu diesen Benchmarks. Jeweils 30 Prozent mehr ALUs und TMUs im Vergleich zur Adreno 660 des Snapdragon 888 waren einem Sprecher zu entlocken. Der maximale GPU-Takt liege erneut oberhalb von 800 MHz und man wolle auch künftig nicht nur in die Breite gehen, sondern den Takt weiter steigern.
GPU-Leistung auf A15-Bionic-Niveau
Qualcomm nannte zur Präsentation des Chips im Schnitt Zugewinne von 30 Prozent gegenüber der Adreno 660, jedoch bis zu 60 Prozent Mehrleistung unter Verwendung der Vulkan-API. Die Adreno 730 ist die erste GPU-Generation von Qualcomm, die den Fokus der Optimierungen auf Vulkan legt und die damit einen Ruck bei den Entwicklern auslösen soll, unter Android vermehrt auf Vulkan statt OpenGL zu setzen. Qualcomm hat sich jetzt für diese Neuausrichtung entschieden, obwohl erst 5 Prozent der Spiele unter Android auf Vulkan setzen. Für OpenGL, Vulkan und bei den Notebook-Chips auf DirectX 12 zu optimieren, halte die GPU-Leistung zurück, erklärte ein Sprecher. Das Optimieren für OpenGL gehört damit der Vergangenheit an, fortan gilt das nur noch für zwei Low-Level-APIs. Das ist weiterhin eine mehr als bei Apple, wo nur mit Metal alle GPUs für eine einzige und zudem eigene API ausgelegt sein.
Mit dem Fokus auf Vulkan fallen die Messungen entsprechend fulminant für Qualcomm aus. Die Adreno 730 liefert die Leistung einer aktuellen Apple-GPU des A15 Bionic und landet dabei zwischen der 4- und 5-Core-Variante aus iPhone 13 und iPhone 13 Pro. Im GFXBench Aztec Ruins lassen sich Zugewinne von weit über 50 Prozent festhalten. Im 3DMark Wild Life gibt es ebenfalls große Sprünge nach vorne und der ältere Snapdragon 888 wird deutlich auf die hinteren Plätze verwiesen. In den älteren OpenGL-Benchmarks gelingt es Qualcomm ebenfalls, den ersten Platz einzunehmen, denn Apple schenkt dieser API schon länger keine Beachtung mehr.

Das QRD unter Dauerlast
Unter Dauerlast verhält sich der Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 nicht ganz so wie von Qualcomm zum Investor Day beworben, wobei der hiesige Test im 3DMark durchgeführt wurde und das QRD keinem finalen Smartphone entspricht, das man kaufen kann. Aber Qualcomm hatte mit einer besseren Leistung unter Dauerlast im Vergleich zu Wettbewerber „A“ geworben, die zumindest in diesem Test nicht erzielt wird. Das QRD steigt mit hoher Leistung in den Test ein und gibt diese mit steigender Temperatur bis zum 7. Durchlauf kontinuierlich ab, bevor im weiteren Verlauf der Messungen eine konstant hohe Leistung geliefert wird, die deutlich oberhalb jedes Smartphones mit Snapdragon 888 liegt.
Sollte sich Qualcomm mit der Angabe nur auf die 4-Core-Variante des A15 Bionic bezogen haben, dann war diese annähernd korrekt, denn die Adreno 730 liefert unter Dauerlast die gleiche Leistung wie ein iPhone 13 mini. Zum Ende des Tests knickt Apple sogar noch ein wenig ein, was mit dem QRD von Qualcomm nicht passiert ist. Hersteller werden im neuen Jahr aber beweisen müssen, wie gut ihnen die Integration des Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 gelingt, um mindestens die Leistung des QRD zu erreichen.
