WHO has named the variants of the corona virus based on the Greek alphabet, where omicron is actually preceded by the letter xi. That letter, however, the WHO chose to skip.
The letter was now also skipped, which was explained by the fact that it can be pronounced as the English word “new”.
As for xi, it seems the explanation instead is that China's leader is named Xi Jinping.
