In May, Karolinska University Hospital decided to stop new hormone treatments for children and young people in “trans care” – among other things with reference to the risk of “potential side effects”.

But in fact, the hospital knew that there were concrete cases of children who had serious side effects and injuries, and not just “potential” ones.

There are 13 known such cases in Stockholm, reports Assignment review .

An example is a girl who at the age of ten realized that she was in fact a boy. When the girl was eleven years old, the doctors at Karolinska started treatment. The treatment with stop hormones led, among other things, to the girl's skeleton being damaged and to her staying in the plant.

Despite the established injuries, the treatment continued for another three months, and no deviation report was made.

Only after Assignment review examined the case with the girl has a deviation report been submitted.

– You obviously feel anger towards those they trusted. But also towards myself, I am the one who will protect my child but I have not done that in any way, says the girl's mother Natalie.

Chemical castration
Several other children have experienced side effects from hormone treatments, where the treatment has been discontinued.

“In one child, suspected liver effects are seen, another is diagnosed with reduced bone density after two years. .

Ricard Nergårdh, who treats children with gender dysphoria, describes the treatment with stop hormones as a form of castration.

– It is chemical castration. It can affect mental state in a way that you did not think and did not want. It is very important that the patient and the patient's family are well informed about it, he says to Assignment review.
