On iPhone and iPad, it is the most natural thing in the world for video streaming services to have an app available. But on Macs, it's a whole different story. Only Apple's own Apple TV+ has a Mac app, but all other services require you to use Safari or another browser to watch. That has now changed for Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon Prime Video for Mac

Amazon has made the existing app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV even more universal by releasing a Mac version of it. After logging in with your Amazon account (automatic filling from iCloud Keychain doesn't work unfortunately), you can start watching right away. The app looks familiar with a design similar to the iPad and Apple TV app.

At the top you can filter between Home, TV, Movies, Kids and Originals, while at the bottom you will find tabs for Home, Store, Search, Downloads and My stuff. With the app you can watch unlimited via the Prime Video offer as well as buy or rent individual films. You can confirm your purchase with the Touch ID sensor on the Mac.

The advantage of an app over a website is that all kinds of Mac functions can be supported. The app can send push messages and it is also possible to download movies and series so that you can watch them offline on your Mac. Other features like Picture-in-picture and AirPlay are also supported, making it quite a complete app.
