The target of Sunday's terrorist attack in Liverpool is believed to have been a cathedral where 2,000 people gathered for a memorial service for war veterans.

Instead, the bomb was detonated in a taxi outside a women's clinic – and the suspected terrorist died himself in the explosion.

Just before the car exploded, the driver, David Perry, got out of the vehicle. He also managed to lock the doors to the taxi.

This action may have led to many lives being saved, says Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson to the BBC.

– Through his heroic efforts, the taxi driver has managed to avert what could have been an absolutely terrible disaster, says Anderson.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday morning that Perry appears to have acted with “incredible mindfulness and bravery”, writes Sky News.

David Perry himself escaped with minor injuries and is now home from the hospital again.

Three men between 21 and 29 have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the act.
