Dropbox is letting M1 users down (and these apps aren't over yet)

Vote for M1 support

Dropbox will only offer M1 support if enough people vote for the idea, the company has announced. Dropbox's Mac app now runs on Rosetta on Macs with an M1 processor, which consumes a lot more memory and drains your battery. An Apple Silicon optimized version of the Mac app could solve that, but Dropbox is refusing to make it for now. There would be too little interest to prioritize it. You can vote here.

An owner of a Mac with M1 raised the issue on the Dropbox forum in June, but it wasn't taken seriously. He also indicated that Rosetta was not an option, because it works only moderately due to bugs and because it consumes too much battery. Because Dropbox is a paid service, this user expected a little more effort. However, a Dropbox employee responded with a remarkable response: the suggestion would not be shared with the development team until there was more interest.

By the way, Dropbox also took forever to convert the 32-bit app to 64-bit, so the outlook isn't great for M1 Mac owners. One commenter suspects that Dropbox's development team is made up of one part-timer who works in a basement.

Logitech and Adobe not over yet
Dropbox isn't the only company struggling with M1. The switch still has to be made at Logitech: the Logi Options app has not yet been made suitable for M1, while Logitech is a company that often works closely with Apple. Logi Options lets you control the settings of your mouse, keyboard, and trackpad, which is an important app for peripherals you use every day. However, the jump to M1 has yet to be made.

And although Adobe – which also works closely with Apple – has already adapted many apps for M1, this is far from the case with all apps. The website has a decent list of apps that still need updating.

… but isn't there Rosetta?

As suggested earlier, Rosetta is really just a stopgap. Apple Silicon has an important plus of the very good battery life, but that is negated if you use Rosetta apps.

Google Drive has recently been updated with full Mac M1 support.

There are many more apps, such as WhatsApp Desktop. An extensive list of suitable and unsuitable apps can be found here.

If you want to vote for an M1 version of Dropbox, you can press the blue button on this page. You do need to enter a username for this, but you don't have to join the forum. Or maybe you want to, to follow the soap around this M1.
