Before the successor to the Snapdragon 888 and with it the new flagship is expected in December, Qualcomm is once again adding optimized designs in the 700, 600 and 400 series. Snapdragon 778G +, 695, 680 and 480 all offer higher CPU and GPU performance and sometimes more 5G features such as mmWave.

Snapdragon 778G + with higher CPU and GPU performance

The Snapdragon 778G + largely corresponds to the Snapdragon 778G announced in May, which is in turn a sister model of the Snapdragon 780G, but comes from a different foundry with TSMC and has been slightly adjusted in terms of RAM, GPU and ISP. The Snapdragon 778G + now offers a maximum of 2.5 instead of the previous 2.4 GHz in the performance cluster, which is based on four Cortex-A78. According to Qualcomm, the Adreno 642L GPU also has a higher clock rate, but the details are again under lock and key. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 700 family has grown by 44 percent last year and OEMs now have another option with the 778G +.

Snapdragon 695 supports mmWave

The Snapdragon 690 announced in June 2020 is followed by the reamed Snapdragon 695. Compared to its predecessor, Qualcomm names a 15 percent higher CPU and 30 percent higher GPU performance. The CPU has an octa-core configuration of a previously unknown division and clocks with up to 2.2 instead of 2.0 GHz. The Snapdragon 690 has two Cortex-A77 and six Cortex-A55 that will likely continue to be used. The 5G support has been expanded, although the integrated modem with the Snapdragon X51 remains the same. But the mmWave support has been added, which makes the chip interesting for the US and Asian markets.

Snapdragon 480+ clocks 10 percent higher

5G is also dominated by the new Snapdragon 480+, which follows the Snapdragon 480 shown this January at the virtual CES. The smallest chip family with 5G also has a higher maximum clock, which is 2.2 instead of 2.0 GHz. On the other hand, nothing should have changed in terms of the CPU structure with two Cortex-A76 and six Cortex-A55.

Snapdragon 680 puzzles

The Snapdragon 680 remains at a maximum of 4G/LTE, which should be just below the Snapdragon 690 with 5G in terms of name, but is worse equipped in detail than the smaller one in terms of name Snapdragon 678 or 675. According to the data sheet, there is a Kryo-265 CPU, which, measured by its name, is positioned slightly above the Kryo-260-CPU based on Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53, but below Kryo 360 (A75 ) or Kryo 460 (A76) remains. Qualcomm specifies the maximum clock rate of the fast cores with 2.4 GHz, but details about the clusters are still pending. The GPU with the Adreno 610 corresponds to that of the Snapdragon 460, 662 and 665, the Snapdragon X11 modem in turn corresponds to that of the Snapdragon 460 and 662.
