After the sale, the former Huawei subsidiary Honor is returning to the German market with the first new smartphone. Under the new owner, the US embargo no longer applies, so that Google services can be installed again and the 5G modem in the SoC can remain activated. The Honor 50 starts at prices from 529 euros.

Honor has not been part of Huawei for almost a year, but is owned by Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd. The subsidiary was sold by Huawei in order to save its existence. Because Honor belongs to Huawei, due to the US embargo, Honor has not been allowed to install Google services on new smartphones for a long time, nor has it been allowed to buy 5G technology from US companies. In general, the selection of SoCs and other components was very limited for Huawei, regardless of the shortage of chips.

Google is back on Honor smartphones

Two weeks ago, the German press office announced that the Honor 50 will run again with Google Mobile Services (GMS). As before the embargo, buyers will have full access to all of the well-known Google applications and services and can thus install additional apps from a broad catalog via the Google Play Store. Access to numerous mobility and banking apps including Google Pay is also restored.

Four colors are available

The Honor 50 is available in Germany in two configurations with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB for 529 euros in the colors “Midnight Black”, “Emerald Green ”and“ Honor Code ”, with the latter variant bearing shiny Honor logos on the back, as well as with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB for 599 euros in“ Midnight Black ”and“ Frost Crystal ”.

Qualcomm is again allowed to deliver chips including 5G support to the new owner, while Huawei can order the SoCs, but receives them without 5G, as the peculiar features of the P50 show. The Honor 50 is powered by the Snapdragon 778G, a sister model of the Snapdragon 780 with LPDDR5 instead of LPDDR4X, but without Prime Core, a slightly weaker Adreno 642L GPU, smaller Spectra 570L ISP and manufactured in TSMC N6 instead of Samsung 5LPE. Integrated into the SoC is the Snapdragon X53 modem, which covers all cellular standards from 2G to the current 5G.

Many options for video recordings

Even with the somewhat smaller image processor, the smartphone should offer a wide range of options, especially in the area of video, especially when it comes to perspectives. The user can choose from six multi-video recording modes: alternating recordings from front to rear camera, dual view recordings with front and rear cameras, dual view recordings with rear and rear cameras, picture-in-picture recordings, Time-lapse recordings and slow-motion recordings. Honor relies on a quad camera system with 108 megapixels for the primary lens, 8 megapixels for ultra-wide-angle photos and 2 megapixels each for macro photos and the acquisition of depth information.

OLED display with 120 Hz

Another 32-megapixel camera for selfies sits in the display and occupies a circular recess in the center of the 6.57-inch OLED screen. The screen offers stretched Full HD resolution with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Honor has also integrated an optical fingerprint sensor into the display. The technology supplies a battery with 4,300 mAh, which can be charged with a maximum of 66 watts via a proprietary standard. Wireless charging is offered by the Honor 50.

The Honor 50 can be ordered immediately, it starts at 529 euros in the smaller memory configuration, the version with more RAM and storage costs 599 euros.
