Spaniards who defied the quarantine regulations during the country's shutdowns in 2020 will get their fines back after a court decision that ruled the shutdowns illegal according to the constitution, writes AP.

The message is in line with a previous court decision finding that citizens' restricted freedom of movement violated their fundamental rights. These are fines handed out during the first health emergency, which lasted from 14 March to 21 June last year.

According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, more than 1.1 million fines were handed out to people who broke the restrictions , including requirements not to leave the home.
