Switch Online Expansion Pack: Nintendo's Game Pass entices with old games

Nintendo's answer to offers such as the Microsoft Game Pass is called “Expansion Pass”. In terms of price, it undercuts the competition, but only contains old games from Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis. There is a family membership for that.

According to the name, the Expansion Pass is actually a kind of add-on, namely an expanded version of Nintendo Online that is available for 20 euros per year granted access to multiplayer functions, cloud storage and games of the SNES and NES.

The Expansion Pass, which will be available from October 26th, includes all these functions for 40 euros a year plus the expansion – not the main game that is required to play – Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, 16 retro games from Sega Genesis and selected ones Nintendo 64 titles that can now be played online by up to four users. The frame rate and resolution are increased. According to Nintendo, nine games are available at the start, with more to follow.

In addition to the normal membership, Nintendo also offers a family subscription for 70 euros, which can be used by a maximum of eight Nintendo accounts at the same time. Subscriptions with a term of one or three months are not offered. Although these are available for Nintendo Switch Online, they are not listed for the expansion pack. The Animal Crossing DLC ​​currently provides an incentive for purchases outside the group of retro fans, which costs around 25 euros for individual purchases, almost as much as an annual subscription to the service.

Retro-Gamepads

For The US version of the Nintendo website also lists retro controllers for around 50 US dollars each. The Sega Genesis Control Pad and a Nintendo 64 controller with built-in force feedback are available. However, the purchase is tied to one condition: The customer must currently be a member of the Switch online service.
