The Stellantis Group is also investing heavily in the development of solutions related to autonomous driving that can be integrated into the interior of its cars. The Group has just concluded the European project L3Pilot which aims to test the feasibility; of Level 3 autonomous driving functions on public roads. The results of this experimentation that is & egrave; carried out over the course of 4 years, will be presented in these days at the ITS World Congress 2021.

With Level 3 of autonomous driving (here we explore all the existing Levels), the driver does not need to constantly monitor the driving situation, but must regain control when the system requires it. Starting from the results obtained, the Stellantis Group will continue with the next project co-financed by the European Union: Hi-Drive . From 2021 to 2025, the group will face & agrave; a series of challenges for the widespread use of higher levels advanced autonomous driving.

EXPERIMENTATION

The L3Pilot project is & egrave; focused on testing and evaluating technology as a safe and efficient means of transport in real traffic conditions. Among other things, the technical aspects, the driving behavior, the welcome by users and the impact on traffic and safety were evaluated. During the project involving 34 partners globally, 70 cars equipped with automated driving functions were used in 14 pilot sites and seven countries.

750 professional drivers, experienced in SAE Level 3 functions, both as drivers and passengers participated. 400,000 km on the motorways were traveled, half of them; of which in mode & agrave; automated and 24,000 km in urban scenarios, of which 22,200 km in mode; automated.

During the project, the cars used faced a & rsquo; wide range of driving situations , including parking, freeway overtaking, crossing urban intersections and close-range scenarios. More specifically, the following automated driving functions have been tested.

  • Motorway Chauffeur: driving at high speed, lane change and automatic overtaking
  • Traffic Jam Chauffeur: driving at low speed on congested roads
  • Remote Parking: parallel and comb parking scenarios
  • Home Zone: memory of the path of repetitive maneuvers to enter and exit parking areas

Stellantis underlines how the L3Pilot project has provided an important contribution in testing the automated driving functions, in analyzing the performance of autonomous systems from the user's point of view and in understanding the impact of the diffusion of technology on road safety in mixed traffic contexts.
