The new upgradeability of the internal mass storage of the PlayStation 5 inspires the SSD manufacturers. Samsung has now specially reissued its 980 Pro SSD in a variant with a heat sink, because Sony recommends such a version for retrofitted M.2 SSDs.

Sony's recommendation leads to the cooler edition

That the new possibility to upgrade the SSD in the PlayStation 5 gave the impetus to the development of the 980 Pro with heatsink, that's why Samsung does no secret. The previous 980 Pro (test) with copper foil in the sticker and further optimized “Dynamic Thermal Guard” was already compatible with the game console before. But since Sony recommends a heat sink, Samsung made improvements.

Thanks to its intelligent temperature management, the 980 PRO has always been Playstation 5-ready. You can play extensively with it on the Playstation 5, as various media tests have shown. For all those who can't stop gambling and let their technical equipment run hot in long sessions, we have now developed the 980 PRO with integrated heatsink

The factory-installed cooler allows the Samsung 980 Pro grow to a thickness of 8.6 millimeters. Since Sony allows M.2 SSDs with a height of 11 mm for the PS5, there is still room for improvement. However, Samsung also undercuts the requirement of the “PCI-SIG D8 standard specification” of up to 8.8 mm, according to the press release. It should also be possible to use it in a slim notebook.

At the beginning of November, the Samsung 980 Pro with heatsink will be available at recommended retail prices of around 220 euros (1 TB) and 420 euros ( 2 TB). Experience has shown that the prices in the free trade will be far below the manufacturer's RRP. Nevertheless, a significant surcharge compared to the versions without a cooler is to be expected. For the models with 250 GB and 500 GB, however, there is no new edition with a cooler.
