Amazfit is bringing a new generation of smartwatches onto the market with the GTR 3, GTS 3 and GTR 3 Pro models, which compared to its predecessor, the Amazfit GTR 2 (test ), new sensors and improvements in almost all areas. ComputerBase was able to take a closer look at the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro in advance.

While the Amazfit GTS 3 and GTR 3 start today for 149.99 euros, the GTR 3 Pro costs 199 , 99 euros.

In the following, the differences between the three new smartwatches will be discussed before the GTR 3 Pro is explained in more detail.

GTS 3 and GTR 3 im Compared to GTR 3 Pro

GTS 3 and GTR 3 are technically largely identical, but differ in their shape. The GT S is square ( s quare), the GT R is r and. According to this scheme, the GTR 3 Pro is also round, but also technically the best equipped version. All three rely on an AMOLED display, which is 1.45 inches on the GTR 3 Pro, 1.39 inches on the GTR 3 and 1.75 inches on the square GTS 3. The resolution of the GTR 3 Pro is 480 × 480 pixels, the pixel density is 331 ppi. The GTR 3 has 326 ppi at 454 × 454 pixels, while the GTS 3 has 341 ppi. In all three models, the maximum brightness of the screens should be 1,000 cd/m².

Only the GTR 3 Pro offers WLAN, internal storage for music files and Bluetooth telephony so that calls can be made directly via the watch. The battery life of the GTR 3 Pro should be up to 12 days – the same applies to the GTS 3 despite a smaller battery. For the GTR 3 it should be up to 21 days. This is put to the test for the GTR 3 Pro in the test.

The Amazfit GTR 3 Pro in detail

Round OLED display and light housing

At 46 × 46 × 10.7 mm, the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro measures as much as the GTR 2 and weighs 32 g without the bracelet. With a leather strap it's 43 g – the stainless steel model of the GTR 2 weighs 39 g, while an Apple Watch 6 (44 mm/aluminum) weighs 65 g with a strap. The housing of the GTR 3 Pro is made of aluminum, the wristband is made of silicone. As with its predecessor, the user can swap it for any other bracelet with a width of 22 mm. Due to its light weight, the model is comfortable to wear again, but you sweat quickly under the silicone bracelet. Amazfit certifies that the watch has a tightness of 5 ATM, so it can be worn when washing hands or showering.

The 1.45 inch AMOLED display has grown compared to the GTR 2, whose display is 1.39 inches. The GTR 3 continues to rely on the size of the GTR 2. The 2.5D curved glass is hardened, Amazfit does not give a more precise specification.

Smaller black borders around the display

The edges of the display to the edge of the watch are a bit smaller than on the GTR 2. The smartwatch is still surrounded by a black frame that is around 3 mm wide. Amazfit conceals this again well on many dials with a black background on the sides, so that the transition between the screen and the edge is hardly noticeable. The brightness of the display is automatically adjusted to the surroundings via a light sensor – but the brightness set in this way is a bit high at night. If desired, the brightness can also be controlled manually via the settings on the clock. The higher peak brightness of up to 1,000 cd/m² ensures good readability in everyday life, even outdoors. Once again, there is nothing wrong with the display quality of the screen.

Bluetooth 5.0, WLAN and GPS

The two crowns on the right are designed as buttons, the upper one now also as a rotary control, like on the Apple Watch, to be able to navigate through menus. In addition to Bluetooth 5.0, the watch supports WLAN 802.11b/g/n with 2.4 GHz as a wireless radio connection. For navigation, not only is a compass integrated, but also the five positioning standards GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BDS and QZSS – the predecessor only had GPS and GLONASS, so there is a lot more to offer here.

More measurements in new sensor

A new 6PD BioTracker (photodiode) is responsible for the health data, which measures the heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, stress level and breathing rate. The last two measurements are new. Amazfit calls the photodiode sensor following the nomenclature “BioTracker 3 PPG”. According to the manufacturer, this should work more precisely than with the GTR 2, since the sensors are closer together. In addition, a real barometer is built into the GTR 3 Pro that measures the air pressure. The wearer's skin temperature is also recorded. The wearer is informed about notifications via a vibration motor.

In addition to sleep tracking, which analyzes the different phases of sleep, as well as measurements of blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, breathing rate and stress level, the menstrual cycle can also be analyzed, with the fertile and sterile days also being predicted. What is new is that the four pieces of data relating to blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, breathing rate and stress level can be recorded manually via the watch in one step within 45 seconds. This means that the determination does not have to be triggered individually for each value.

The watch can record sporting activity and recognizes eight of them automatically as soon as the wearer does one (jogging, running, indoor running, treadmill, cycling, rowing, elliptical, swimming). A function called “Virtual Pacer” shows on the display of the Smartwatch when jogging (outdoor running and treadmill activities) whether you are faster or slower than in previous comparative values. Amazfit is once again not stingy when it comes to the activities that are available to choose from. 150 activities can be tracked.

There are no apps in my own operating system

As an operating system, Amazfit relies again on the in-house development Zepp OS. On the GTR 3 Pro, it should offer more fluid animations. A problem that immediately shows up again with the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro is the lack of support for this in-house solution by developers. The GTR 3 Pro does not offer an app store with well-known additional apps.

In the meantime, however, Zepp has implemented the coupling with Amazon Alexa, so that the digital voice assistant can be used directly on the watch. The offline voice assistant, which was initially missing in the GTR 2 and which allows the functions of the watch to be used without using the touchscreen, is now also available in Germany.

Animated dials from the shop

As with the predecessor, the user can choose from numerous dials from the Amazfit online shop. Some of them are also animated when the clock is lifted, rotated and activated in this way. Once again, there is no lack of selection and customization options, even if many of the specimens are colorful instead of classic. If an animated watch face is selected, the watch face shown on the always-on display is still without animation.

1,5 Days of battery life when everything is activated

The battery of the smartwatch has a capacity of 450 mAh, which is 21 mAh smaller than in the GTR 2. Amazfit speaks of up to 12 days of battery life with normal use – whereby the always-on display must be deactivated. Under “Heavy Usage” it should last 6 days, the permanent, active use of GPS should result in a battery life of 35 hours. However, even “Heavy Usage” does not mean that all functions are activated. In the test, the automatic detection in the background was activated for all bio-sensors, which already provides several warnings in the app that this could have an extreme effect on the battery life. The always-on display was also activated, and the brightness was regulated automatically. In the test, this resulted in a battery life of 1.5 to a maximum of 2 days. By deactivating the automatic sensor detection around the clock, the battery life can be significantly extended if desired.

Two contact surfaces on the underside are used to load again to which the charging cable is magnetically locked. The contact is stronger and better than with the GTR 2, but still comparatively shaky. Wireless continues to not charge.

Setup via the Zepp app

The Zepp app, under which the company combines all products, is still used to set up the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro. The new clocks are supported from version 6.3.0. If the watch is switched on and the language selected, the QR code can be scanned again to download the app either for Android or iOS. The setup and synchronization are then done again via the app.

Can't convince again the synchronization in everyday life. With the GTR 3 Pro, the problem was again that sometimes there was no synchronization between the clock and the app and this also failed in the app. The solution was to switch Bluetooth on and off on the watch and on the smartphone.

However, the Zepp app again offers many setting options, simply because the tracking can be comprehensively adapted. The time that the display should remain active after automatic activation and the limitation of many functions to certain times of the day are also implemented well and comprehensively.

The nested structure of the app is also a bit cumbersome, where you have to dig through several levels to find the right setting. When the app is started, a lot of vital data on sleep, heart rate, oxygen saturation and steps are displayed on the start page. Under the tab “Health”, goals can be set and previous successes can be viewed. The device-specific settings are then hidden behind the name of the clock in the “Profile” tab.

Even if the settings are varied, not everything is implemented comfortably. Notifications serve as an example: If notifications from apps are to be displayed on the watch, they must be released individually via “Notifications and Reminders” under “App Alerts”. Not all installed apps appear here, but only those from which a notification has already come. For this reason, you have to switch to this menu again and again in the first few days of use in order to activate newly added apps for notifications on the watch, if necessary. In addition, notifications are often still only displayed in text form, without logos of the respective app, preview images or other information.

Individual areas in the app such as “Link Maps” and the “AppStore” are currently still empty and contain Chinese characters.

Operation not always smooth

The operation of the GTR 3 Pro via the touch display is said to be more fluid than with the GTR 2. In practice, it has been shown that the menus are actually largely, if not entirely fluid and well presented, and the software still needs some attention to detail. If you swipe from right to left through menus, for example through the vital data, the view always gets stuck between two windows. With firmware version 8.16.7.1, which was published immediately before the announcement, these hang-ups occur much less frequently than at the beginning of the test, but have not completely disappeared. But the difference is clear. The GTR 3 Pro is still not as fluid as an Apple Watch.

Also problems with Changes from the always-on watch face to the activated watch face have already been resolved by the firmware update. In addition, even with the German language setting, the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro repeatedly displayed content on the dial in English or Chinese. A point that has also improved significantly with the latest firmware. First-time customers should therefore immediately initiate a firmware update, even if this took more than an hour in the test.

The operation itself follows the now familiar pattern. Depending on which side the display is swiped from, the settings, vital data or notifications open. What should be displayed in the menus, the user can in turn partially adjust via the app.
