The average temperature at the Amundsen – Scott base between April and September was -61 degrees. It is the coldest temperature measured since the measurements started in 1957.

During the period, it has been as much as 4.5 degrees colder than the average for the past 30 years.

Even in September, the temperature was on average, the coldest recorded at the South Pole, says David Bromwich, a polar researcher at Ohio State University.

Researcher Matthew Lazzara states that at these temperatures it is difficult to use aircraft: turns into jelly. “

More cases of extreme cold have been noted elsewhere in the world. At the Russian research station Vostok, the temperature dropped to -79.4 degrees on September 30, which was only 0.6 degrees from the lowest temperature recorded in the world in October.
