These are the new screen resolutions for the 2021 MacBook Pros

Apple is likely to announce two new MacBook Pros later this year: the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro. Although we've known the screen sizes for months, the exact resolutions were still a mystery. Steve Moser discovered two new resolutions in the code of the macOS Monterey beta that have not been used by Apple before. This probably concerns the screen resolutions of the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021.

The two newly discovered resolutions are 3456 x 2234 Retina and 3024 x 1964 Retina. MacBooks support multiple resolutions, but of the built-in displays, Apple always uses the term Retina. As a result, these resolutions are most likely those of the 2021 MacBook Pro. With these resolutions, the pixels per inch are higher than current models, even with the current 16-inch Intel MacBook Pro.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 has a native resolution of 3072 x 1920. With the new resolution of 3456 x 2234, this model can run at 2x Retina resolution by default. For the current model, Apple uses a scaled resolution. This prevents Apple from looking bloated. The new resolution comes out at a pixel density of approximately 257 pixels per inch. With the current models this is around 227 pixels per inch.

That the resolution of the 14-inch version (3024 x 1964) would be higher than the current 13-inch (2560 x 1600), is no surprise because of the larger screen. But the fact that Apple has also improved the 16-inch screen is a nice bonus. All in all, this higher resolution produces a sharper image, which is especially useful for professionals who are busy with photo and video editing.

The new models are expected to be announced in October or November at a separate Apple event. Earlier you could read about our expectations of the MacBook Pro 2021.
