iOS 12.5.5 now available for download

Apple periodically releases updates for older devices. Today it's time for iOS 12.5.5 (build number 16H62), which probably mostly fixes security vulnerabilities. Recently, Apple has faced a number of exploits, such as those used by the Pegasus spyware. Whether these updates are also intended for this is not yet entirely clear; Apple doesn't give any information about it. The updates information page is still at 12.5.4 at the time of writing and the security updates page has not been updated either.

We do not expect any new features in iOS 12.5.5, but we do expect all kinds of security improvements so that you are safe again while using your somewhat older device. The previous update iOS 12.5.4 appeared earlier this year in June.

Apple will continue to release updates for at least five years after the release of a device, and that is also the case with these older devices. The following iPhones are eligible for the update to iOS 12.5.5:

  • iPhone 6 (2014): native iOS 8
  • iPhone 6 Plus (2014): native iOS 8
  • iPhone 5s (2013): iOS 7 natively

And also these devices:

  • iPad Air (2013): native iOS 7.0.3
  • iPad mini 2 (2013): native iOS 7
  • iPad mini 3 (2014): native iOS 8.1
  • iPod touch 6th generation (2015): native iOS 8.4

Do you have a device that is slightly older, such as an iPhone 5, then you cannot update.

Note: keep the reactions on-topic, concrete and clear for others. Personal status updates on whether your download has started/successfully adds nothing to the discussion. It may also take a little longer before the update is visible. You don't have to report this either. These comments will be deleted.
