Electric cars: 600 km of range may be enough for BMW

When we talk about electric cars we always discuss the topic of autonomy . With the evolution of batteries, average distances have increased significantly. Some premium models claim that they can even exceed 700km or 800km as in the case of the Lucid Air. There is who is also working to ensure that the cars can count on 1,000 km of autonomy. BMW , however, does not seem willing to want to create battery-powered cars capable of having record ranges. At least, this is; what stated David Ferrufino , head of the BMW i4 project, in an interview.

A thousand kilometers of autonomy are not a goal that we have with our fully electric cars.

We aim for 600 kilometers for our fully electric cars and 100 kilometers with our plug-in hybrids in everyday driving.

For the German carmaker, 600km of mileage may be enough (the BMW i4 eDrive40 offers 590km of range according to the WLTP cycle). Ferrufino's point of view also reflects the investments made in improving the batteries and, in particular, in speed; recharge . The BMW i4, in direct current, can & ograve; supplying energy up to a maximum power of 200 kW. In this context, go from 10% to 80% of the capacity; takes about 31 minutes. With the increase in ultra-high-power charging points, long-distance travel is no problem.

Not only do we have the advances in battery technology, we also have the rapidly growing public charging network. Crossing Europe from Norway to Italy is already a happy experience when you do it in an electric car.

Provided you have an adequate charging infrastructure, a BMW i4 can travel 1,000 km with just one short break. Ferrufino then added that the maximum autonomy will depend & agrave; from the segment in which it will be; offered the vehicle.

For example, we do not think that a range of 600 kilometers will be; suitable for a BMW i3 as an urban car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, we think that around 600 kilometers is a very customer-friendly solution.

For the German manufacturer, then , thanks to the improvement of the speed; charging, 600 km of autonomy can be more & ugrave; that adequate to offer on their cars. For the moment, therefore, the brand will not propose & agrave; models with higher mileage.
