New Apple TV screensavers in tvOS 15

The new tvOS screensavers keep Apple close to home. They show Yosemite National Park (US), the Grand Canyon (US) and Patagonia (Chile). There are respectively 7, 5 and 4 videos available from each location that show the beauty of the respective natural areas in high resolution. Apple shows the regions you may have visited from a completely different perspective thanks to drones.

Yosemite National Park will be known to many people. You will soon recognize the snow-covered Half Dome and the gigantic facade of El Capitan, after which a macOS version is named. The Tuolumne Meadows show a grassy landscape with lakes, bordered by mountains.

In the Grand Canyon we follow stretches of the Colorado River and recognizable spots such as Burnt Canyon. South America comes into the picture in the screensavers of the Patagonia region of Chile, Torres del Paine to be precise. Here too we see mountains and landscapes with rivers and lakes.

The fact that there are new screensavers in tvOS 15 is quite a big deal, because last year tvOS 14 didn't contain any new – just at a time when TV consumption was at its highest.

How to view the new tvOS 15 screensavers

The new screensavers don't appear immediately when updating to tvOS 15. The system checks every so often for new screensavers on Apple's server, so you may not get them right away.

You can go to Settings > General > Go to screen saver and indicate that you want to download new videos daily. You can also play all screensavers that have already appeared on this page and enjoy the images. You can send them via AirPlay to your TV screen to get an impression of the overwhelming effect.

The tvOS screensavers have been around since 2015 when the fourth generation Apple TV hit the market. In addition to the bird's eye aerial screensavers, you can also set Apple photos and your own photos as screensavers. Apple adds new screensavers at irregular times, with a preference for natural areas. But there are also urban regions and oceans, which you fly over at a slow pace.

Here's how you can view the special aerial screensavers:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Screensaver > Type.
  2. Choose Bird's Eye View.

tvOS 15 includes several small new features, such as improvements for AirPods and 4 simultaneous live images of your HomeKit cameras. Check out our rundown of ten tvOS 15 features to get them all covered.
