In iOS 15, Apple has updated the Weather app. Instead of a long list of information, a weather page now consists of a collection of separate blocks. Check the weather using the new animations, the live maps or the updated graphic tiles at the bottom of the app. In this article we give you an overview of the new features of the Weather app that you should not miss. These new features only apply to iOS 15, as unfortunately iPadOS 15 still doesn't get a Weather app.

  1. New animations and design
  2. Live maps
  3. Dynamic layout
  4. Tiles
  5. Report errors< /li>
  6. Weather Alerts

#1 New design: over a thousand new animations

The first thing you notice is the brand new design. Apple claims to have added more than a thousand animations. These are based on the position of the sun, the clouds and the precipitation. So you actually only have to open the Weather app to see exactly what the weather is like. A small side note is that these new designs can only be seen on iPhones with an A12 chip or newer (i.e. the iPhone XS/XR and newer).

The rest of the design is also went on the run. In the weather forecast for the current and coming days you now also see colored bars that indicate the temperature history of the day.

#2 Live precipitation, air quality and UV index maps

At the bottom left of the app you will now find a new map symbol. When you tap it, you initially switch to a map where you can accurately see the temperature by region. Then you can easily switch to the precipitation or air quality map. If you zoom out a bit, you can see how the precipitation moves. Finally, the air quality per area can also be viewed. This works in the Netherlands, but also in other European countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

You can also access the maps by opening a location and scrolling down. If it is currently raining, the rain map will automatically appear at the top. Unfortunately, there is no support for up to the minute rain data yet, as is possible in the US, among others.

#3 Weather determines format of Weather

Depending on the weather forecast, some information blocks are given higher priority. In the event of extreme wind, rain, bad air or sun, appropriate notifications will appear at the top of the page. For example, on the screenshots below you can see that due to the rain or the poor air quality, the relevant information is visible earlier. Apple also provides more context with some explanations about what the weather means, for example on air quality.

You will also still receive notifications about severe weather conditions, such as flooding and strong winds. This was already in previous versions of iOS, but it has been given a fresh coat of paint.

#4 New information tiles

All the information the Weather app showed was previously displayed in a long list. This made it all seem messy. The new design has all kinds of loose tiles that provide more information than before. This way you can see exactly whether the sun has already passed the peak and from which side the wind is blowing. You cannot rearrange these information blocks yourself, but if there is an important weather situation, the information can automatically appear higher on the page.

#5 Report incorrect weather information
Is the current weather forecast wrong? Then you can finally report this. You can report in quite detail what is not right and how it is in your situation. What exactly Apple will do with this is still unknown, but Apple clearly seems to be planning to show better predictions. You can read how to report a problem in the Weather app in our tip.

#6 Reports for precipitation (but not in the Netherlands)
The Weather app can also provide notifications when it starts to rain, snow or hail. You can also receive a notification if it stops raining in the next hour. Unfortunately, these notifications do not work in the Netherlands. You can only receive notifications from cities in the US, UK and Ireland. You can find this setting by going to the overview of your set cities and tapping the round button with the three dots in the top right.
