Domestic. The Swedish west coast is particularly affected by the landfill “debris from the Northeast Atlantic”, ie debris that passed the Northeast Atlantic on its journey from the third world. Now the authorities want to put international pressure on the litigants.

“Situation is unacceptable today”, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency writes on its website and calls for joint efforts from the countries around the Northeast Atlantic to prevent and reduce the supply of rubbish.

Over 90 percent of that rubbish found on beaches are plastic.

The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR) will develop a new updated regional action plan for marine litter.

EU threshold for rubbish on beaches is 20 objects/100m. The median value for the Swedish west coast is just under 200 objects/100 m, but the average value is much higher.

The problem is cross-border. “We alone can not achieve good environmental status with regard to rubbish on the West Coast”, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
