Show all < The research organization Mare Liberum is an initiative led by the former Estonian public prosecutor Margus Kurm, who, however, is not acting as an authority this time, but privately.

The expedition has now sailed from Eemshaven in the Netherlands and is expected to arrive at the sinking site between Finland, Estonia and Sweden in two days. The Maltese-registered research vessel R/S Sentinel is used for the dives.

Early on Monday morning, the vessel had left the Kiel Canal (pictured above) and entered the Baltic Sea, according to the transponder data that R/S Sentinel shared in the maritime traffic system AIS .

Kurm tells ERR that the goal is to map all Estonia's damage through diving, examine the car tire and the surroundings around the wreck.

In total, the work will take ten days and employ 46 people. There are also six journalists on board. The Estonian newspaper Poostimes has co-financed the whole thing and has exclusive rights to pictures and possible finds.

The legal status of the dives in Estonia is unclear. In Sweden, a change in the law has been implemented that grants exceptions to the current peace of mind regarding government diving, but in Estonia the wreck is still only protected against looting according to Margus Kurm, and not against research into the cause of the accident.

The Swedish government has not commented on the information and has not announced any planned interventions. However, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a comment to the media that it has informed Sweden and Finland that the expedition is not supported by Estonian authorities and that it is not a state-sanctioned activity.

The Foreign Ministry's press office stated on Sunday evening for Fria Tider that Sweden has no comment on the dives at the moment, but refers to any statements that may be made on Monday.
