Weekly review and outlook: graphics memory in the death loop and power for VR

While the graphics memory turned death loops in the past week, the HP Reverb G2 finally took off. And Apple managed to collect the reports again this year with its new products.

In the tests of last week, the benchmark test for Deathloop came in just before that Year delayed test of the VR glasses HP Reverb G2 place.

Endless loop also in the graphics memory

Not only technically does Deathloop with DirectX 12, ray tracing and AMD's upscaling technology FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) do a lot, but also playfully the innovative approach knows how to please. Despite extremely high demands on the graphics memory, which has to be at least 10 GB for Ultra HD and maximum texture quality, so that the 10 GB of the GeForce RTX 3080 is the minimum but by no means the optimum, the game is graphically dusty. Ray tracing also only helps to a limited extent and the Void engine, which is known for problems, once again lives up to its name and acknowledges high frame rates with graphic errors. While the technology is struggling with problems, at least the playful aspect is convincing.

Electricity now also on the AMD system

The HP Reverb G2 was finally able to get playful, not only in the editorial office, but also for numerous players, because the cable made too high demands on the power supply via USB. A revised cable from HP finally solves these problems on AMD systems, so that a closer look at the good image quality and the convincing ergonomics could be taken. As a simulation ace, the VR glasses are particularly convincing in Microsoft Flight Simulator, but if the controller tracking is important, things look worse for the Reverb G2. Here Valve and HTC deliver more rounded, but also more expensive overall packages.

One week, one topic: Apple

In the news of last week, however, there was only one topic: the Apple event last Tuesday, during which Apple not only presented the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, but also the Apple Watch Series 7 and a new affordable iPad and a completely redesigned iPad mini. To complete the ranks of reports that made it into the top list this week, the upcoming release of iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8 and the price adjustments and changes to the iPhone 12 have to be mentioned.

There is not much space for other content this week, but Mozilla Firefox made it to second place with its approach of making Windows 10 the default browser with one click. What has always been possible for Microsoft Edge required the cumbersome process of going through the settings for alternative browsers. So that even less experienced users do not fail at this hurdle, Mozilla has copied Microsoft's implementation and now also allows Firefox to be set as the default browser with just one click.

Even if, in view of the news charts of the past week, many are coming Friday – the sales start of the iPhone 13 – in the coming week, ComputerBase will be devoting itself to changes made to the graphics card tests – with greater effects! relaxing Sunday!
