“Foreign security services” will have direct access to FRA's personal data when there is a threat to the Armed Forces' activities or risk of terrorist attacks or IT attacks, according to a new proposal.

FRA shall in addition, be allowed to conduct signal reconnaissance directly to safeguard the interests of the United States, even if it “does not directly concern Sweden and Swedish interests”, reports Ekot.

– In some situations we may intercept other countries when we are not interested themselves, says Mark Klamberg, professor of international international law, to Ekot.

According to Klamberg, Sweden is now a “listening center for other countries”. A role reminiscent of the Cold War, when Sweden sided with the world's third largest air force in order to be an “unsinkable aircraft carrier” for the United States during a nuclear conflict.
