Jimmie Åkesson's distancing from the two countries is interpreted as another concession for the liberal parties that SD wants to cooperate with.

Åkesson has previously defended the Hungarian government. In 2018, he described in a debate article in Aftonbladet the liberal criticism of Hungary as a “campaign against a country that pursues a different policy than what the political, left-liberal establishment professes”.

But now SD- the leader apparently made a complete U-turn on the issue, after receiving criticism from, among others, the Center Party's Annie Lööf. To SvD, the SD leader now says that his party “never had” a role model in Hungary and that they do not even talk about the country internally.

– It is obvious that Hungary is on the way to performing democratically. It is a huge problem, of course, and Poland is heading in the same direction, says Jimmie Åkesson.
