IONITY, premium charging experience? There? still to work | Trento and Brenner

Charging electric cars on the go, a very delicate topic on which we discuss a lot, indeed on which we often argue given that there is ; a continuous question and answer between those who still maintain that with battery vehicles it is a problem if not impossible to travel (Tesla aside) and those who instead think that with the & quot; fast & quot; large displacements are carried out with relative simplicity, only a minimum of programming is enough.

On our trip to the Munich Motor Show 2021 (you can watch the Live again) we have shown that going 1,200 km there and back with an electric & # 39; egrave; possible with times not too different from those traveling with an endothermic car (unless it is a traveler who does not stop even after 600 km for a bathroom stop). However, you have to be realistic in admitting that there is; still to work on the infrastructure front, even the one that should guarantee a premium experience. Have you immediately thought about IONITY? Exactly.

charging costs and consumption IONIQ 5 vs Kona 54

The current project involves the creation of 400 ultra-fast charging stations up to 350 kW throughout Europe. The idea is to offer a premium charging experience . A person arrives with his electric car, connects it to the column and quickly refills (it depends a lot on the type of car) to be able to return to travel. Waiting that the charging ends, there you can & ograve; relax at an accommodation like a bar that should be present on site or at a very short distance (and I underline the very short word).

This, broadly speaking, is; the & quot; format & quot; of IONITY which in many respects follows that of Tesla's Superchargers. But the charging experience is really premium, or else there & # 39; & egrave; a few too many flaws in the service offered?

WHAT DID HERBERT DIESS SAID?

At the IONITY station in Trento the columns all worked . What is really missing , for & ograve ;, is; the structure which should allow people to relax while charging. The 4 energy supply points are located next to an ENI service station . The problem is; that here is just a sort of shop/bar that is not always & egrave; open . Obviously, at night, there is no talk of it, but you can & ograve; find closed even on public holidays such as Sunday.

On the way out, on Sunday 5 September, we found it closed and then we opted for a second stop at a motorway restaurant to eat and go to the bathroom. While waiting, however, one can wait for the full of energy under a canopy (which you see in the photo) & quot; very busy & quot; from the electric … On our return, however, we found it open but the service is; equal to that of a motorway restaurant, perhaps even less, and therefore low. And if you don't buy something, it costs 0.50 euros to go to the bathroom. Not the premium experience so much heralded by IONITY.

Luigi's intrusion: at the checkout they also say they can't invoice for purchases other than food at the counter. Biscuits, Beretta salami and water for everyone with the company card? Forget it …

Precisely for this reason, on our return, since we had not yet had lunch and that the cars were particularly empty, we opted for a quick purchase at the supermarket which is about 7-8 minutes on foot (walking a little ; & egrave; a small bar as well). Lunch we ate leaning against the car and the column while the Kona finished refueling. The IONIQ 5, on the other hand, had finished very quickly (with peaks of over 210 kW the pause is really reduced). And what about Brenner ?

The station is located inside a free covered parking. In front there is a shopping center, useful for refreshment and going to the bathroom. However, the structure is open only during the day and not even until late (it closes at 7pm). The problem, on the way, is been charging. Trying with the Enel X app and card and with Evway, nothing, the energy supply didn't want to leave. Not a problem with the charging stations as some cars from Austria were charging quietly.

Since others were charging, we assumed that the problem was roaming between IONITY, Enel X and Evway . Regardless, the result was that the cars could not refuel. Fortunately, Gabriele is & egrave; attached to the phone with the assistance of IONITY that remotely started the recharges that were given to us . Between tests and a phone call we lost 10/15 minutes. But what would a less patient person do? Would she eventually be able to reload?

The problem, however, is; then it was solved since on return the recharge & egrave; start immediately .

THE WORK TO DO? AGAIN VERY

There is no the will & agrave; to speak ill of IONITY but we must also say how things are if you want to improve a service born to be premium. You can't & ograve; say that everything is always fine and justify the flaws. Mobility electric, today, is not; more only for the early pioneers, but it is spreading rapidly. Is not serious; more it is permissible to face similar situations. Recharging must start immediately with all compatible apps and cards.

And if you also promise some comfort service to pass the time , this must always be there and it must guarantee at least a fair quality . Hoping to find an open and decent bar doesn't rhyme with premium. There is therefore still a lot of work to do and this is not only valid for IONITY because & eacute; the charging experience typically is not still optimal . Too often we still read about problems starting charging and apps that don't work.

Do you really want to push the spread of electric cars? It is then that the infrastructural operators commit themselves more; to offer a higher quality service; instead of & eacute; only complain that governments are putting little money into charging infrastructures. And time is running out because & eacute; compared to a year ago, c & # 39; & egrave; much more; & quot; traffic & quot; at these ultra-fast charging stations. Especially on the way out, there & # 39; & egrave; always been a constant coming and going of cars that needed to recharge.

In addition to the higher quality, they need more; columns not only in new sites but also in those already; existing. We are sure that Herbert Diess would agree with us …
