Jabra Elite 3 in the test: Reduced to the essentials, cheaper but still good

The Elite 3 are a cheaper introduction to Jabra's wireless in-ear headphones and have to forego some functions. Nevertheless, the manufacturer scores with aptX, AAC, transparency mode, app connection and also with the sound, which is not perfect, but good. The earphones are not only a good choice in relation to the price.

The Jabra Elite 3 are the cheapest wireless in-ear headphones in the manufacturer's range. Although they do without additional functions such as ANC or wear detection, they should convince in terms of sound given a price of 79 euros. For this they also rely on Qualcomm's aptX, AAC and a current Bluetooth codec. You don't have to do without extras entirely, because in addition to Google Fast Pair, they also have the “HearThrough” transparency mode and Amazon Alexa as voice assistant and offer optional app support from Jabra Sound + so that firmware updates can also be carried out.

In addition to the earphones and the charging case, the 79 Euro expensive Jabra Elite 3, available from September 1st, comes with a short USB-C to USB-A charging cable and a total of three different sized silicone attachments for the earphones.

Technical data and functions of the Elite 3

Bluetooth 5.2 with Fast Pair, AAC and aptX

As already mentioned at the beginning, the Jabra Elite 3 with Bluetooth 5.2 offer the latest Bluetooth standard and, in addition to the audio codec SBC, also support Qualcomm's aptX and AAC, so that an alternative to SBC is available for both Android and iOS. If a smartphone with at least Android 6.0 is used, Google Fast Pair can be used when pairing with the mobile device, so that the earphones are automatically offered to connect when they are removed from the charging case on the nearby smartphone.

The drivers in the earphones measure 6 mm in diameter, four microphones are supposed to ensure understandable phone calls.

Small charging case without wireless charging

The earphones, which are smaller than the Jabra Elite 85t (test), weigh 5 g each. The charging case weighs only 33 g with dimensions of 34.6 × 63.9 × 28.2 mm and is therefore lighter and smaller than the Elite 85t and is roughly on par with the Elite 75t. In view of the lower price, the charging case has to do without wireless charging. For this it offers a quick charge function via USB-C.

“Bluetooth Multipoint” is not supported, see above that only one device can be connected to the Elite 3 at a time and that it is not possible to switch seamlessly between two devices. If another device is to be connected, the active connection must always be interrupted manually.

With the Jabra Elite 3 you can literally stand in the rain, because they are IP55 protected against water jets from any angle and against dust. Rain and sweat are therefore unproblematic, but you shouldn't submerge the earphones.

Good battery life of 7 hours

The battery life of the Elite 3 is Jabra with up to 7 hours. In conjunction with the charging case, a maximum of 28 hours should be possible – the charging case thus fully charges the earphones three times. Even if you don't get into the range of Samsung's Galaxy Buds + (test) with up to 12 hours with this battery life, 7 hours are completely sufficient and unproblematic in everyday life. In the test, the specified battery life of 7:25 hours at medium volume and AAC is slightly exceeded – with aptX the result is usually a little shorter.

Jabra stays with buttons instead of touch

The Elite 3 rely on control via buttons on the Earbuds. While this effectively prevents incorrect entries, the earphones inevitably press something into your ear with every operation. However, the in-ears offer a good, clear and not too firm pressure point, so that this fact hardly has a negative impact in everyday life.

The right earbud controls the music functions, while the left one takes over other functions. Pressing the button on the right once starts or pauses playback. Pressing it twice jumps forward one track, pressing it three times goes back one track. The volume can also be controlled through the earbuds by pressing and holding the button. This increases the volume on the right earbud and decreases it on the left. A single press on the left earbud switches to the transparency mode and switches it off again. Pressing it twice, on the other hand, starts either Spotify or the voice assistant Amazon Alexa on Android. This can be set via the Jabra + app, but only works with Android. On iOS, on the other hand, a double press starts Siri, just as the Google Assistant is called without adjustment under Android.

The Jabra Elite 3 does not have a wearing detection that automatically pauses and resumes playback when an earphone is removed from the ear or reinserted.

Very good single use changes the controls

The Jabra Elite 3 can also be used individually, switching from both to earphones and vice versa is possible without any interruption. If only the left earbud is used, this changes the operation slightly, because pressing it once no longer calls up the now superfluous transparency mode, but starts or pauses playback, which was normally not used on the left earbud. However, if you press the button twice, the voice assistant remains active. Adjusting the volume, in this case reducing it, is again deactivated.

If only the right earbud is used, nothing changes in its functions. You can jump through tracks and increase the volume.

Jabra Sound + for Equalizer, Alexa and Spotify

The Elite 3 support Jabra's Sound + headphone app. This not only enables an equalizer with six predefined presets to be used, but also the aforementioned functions for calling up Spotify and Alexa under Android directly via the button on the left earphone can be set in the app. In addition, functions such as Find My Jabra to search for misplaced earbuds are available, the battery level of the earbuds is displayed and the transparency mode can be activated.

Comfortable to wear

The Elite 3 have a classic in-ear design, in which the silicone attachments are pressed slightly into the ear canal, thus closing it off. The passive isolation of the earphones is very high, but they are still comfortable to wear. The pressure caused by the tester is pleasantly low, albeit greater than with models like the Apple AirPods Pro.

The shape of the pleasantly small and slightly protruding earbuds also fits very well into the tester's auricle, so that the Jabra Elite 3 do not cause any problems during sport and sit tight. Even when jogging there is no need to readjust the seat, although they do not have ear wings that provide additional stability.
