Silverstone Alta G1M: A tower-shaped case for the desk

Silverstone's Alta cases rely on a “chimney effect” layout with a mainboard rotated by 90 degrees. With the Alta G1M for the Micro-ATX form factor, the required floor space is reduced at the same time, a lot of space is only required in height.

The Alta G1M adopts the basic layout idea from the Silverstone Fortress FT03 from 2011, but in a considerably modernized form that takes into account the current form factors and components. In the bottom of the case there is now a 180 mm fan from Silverstone's AirPenetrator series, which conveys air upwards in the direction of the CPU and the hanging graphics card. A total of five 120 mm fans can also be installed in the rear and behind the right side panel, where a radiator up to a size of 360 mm can alternatively be installed.

fans or drives

However, using the fan bracket on the side panel requires caution: It is located above the CPU. The specified maximum cooler height of 159 millimeters will be reduced when using side fans. In principle, up to four 2.5 “or 3.5” HDDs can be mounted on the brackets instead of fans. Since memory, especially in the SFF area, is increasingly being installed directly on the mainboard in the form of NVMe models, this solution makes sense in this area for such a housing, since the use of larger quantities of data carriers in the classic format is decreasing.

Graphics cards can be 165 millimeters wide and 355 mm long and can draw fresh air directly from the mesh front. The power supply, in turn, sits diagonally in the rear. Here Silverstone replaces the ATX with the more compact SFX and SFX-L form factor. The smaller format allows more fans and air vents to be accommodated. Mesh on the lid and rear serves to remove warm air.

The Alta G1M is expected to reach retailers towards the end of the year, the recommended price is expected to be around 170 US dollars. Like the Alta F1 for the ATX form factor, the new model is therefore in the upper price segment.
