Cannot than arriving from record-breaking Norway (for the number of registrations of electric cars out of the total) the first fully electric cargo ship , certainly not a concept bens & igrave; a real vehicle already; ready to sail in the coming months. The second peculiarity; of this naval vessel & egrave; that does not exist; need of crew on board , a real & quot; drone & quot; aquatic with zero emissions that during the first solo trip will connect & agrave; the two towns of Her & oslash; ya and Brevik. All movements of the Yara Birkeland – this is the name of the freighter – will be carefully evaluated and managed by three different ground control centers.

Built by the chemical company Yara International in collaboration with the technology partner Kongsberg Maritime and the builder Vard, the ship will be able to & agrave; carry up to 103 containers and travel at a speed; maximum of 13 knots , about 24 km/h. To provide the right energy an unprecedented 7 MWh battery pack, or the capacity; of about a hundred electric cars , but there are no indications on the range of the Birkeland and on the charging times at the dock.

The goal is naturally that of drastically reducing the emission of harmful gases (the shipping market is responsible for 2.5-3% of global emissions), both directly, thanks to the electric ship itself, and indirectly since its & quot; green & quot; transport will avoid 40,000 truck trips per year . The energy needed to power the ship will be predictably supplied from renewable sources, also because & eacute; in Norway 95% of the total is; produced with hydroelectric, the rest from thermal and wind.

With Birkland we want to demonstrate technological progress and possibility to further reduce costs by quietly controlling it remotely. Skin and bones operators will still be employed for the loading and unloading phases, anchoring and much more but, according to Jon Sletten of Yara, one day even all these operations will become autonomous.

All that remains is to wait for this very first crossing, more & ugrave; demonstrative what else given the extreme proximity of the two small Norwegian towns which are only 10 km away by car. By sea it will be little more; but the range is still very limited, to understand if more tests will be expected in the short term; ambitious.
