Weekly review and outlook: DLSS, FSR or would you prefer Intel Xe SS in the future?

Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR, which performance turbo is the better? ComputerBase investigated this question last week. And no sooner was the verdict than Intel announced not only the Alder Lake CPU architecture, but also the first details of its own gaming GPU – including DLSS FSR competitor Xe SS.

AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS?

Comparing Nvidia DLSS (test) and AMD FSR (test) is not easy: games usually only offer one of the two technologies. In the game Edge of Eternity (test) both are integrated and so the editors dared to directly exchange blows. This shows what was already clear on the basis of the separate consideration: Both approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages and also depend on the respective implementation in the game. In Edge of Eternity, the DLSS in particular is not convincing, so that the technology, which is superior in the sum of its properties, cannot show its advantage.

Alder Lake turns everything upside down

The report on the first official information on the Alder Lake CPU architecture from Intel expected for the fall came just behind this test. Only then will we see how good Alder Lake will be. On the other hand, it is already clear today that Alder Lake represents a change and offers a lot of potential: The hybrid approach with particularly fast and particularly efficient cores, again increased IPC, new hardware scheduler and support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 has come to a standstill , which has been observed at Intel for years, is definitely waning. And the interest of the readers was high.

In the report on Intel's gaming graphics cards of the Arc series, which were initially based on the Alchemist architecture, which were postponed to the first quarter of 2022, looked completely different: Although a competitor for AMD and Nvidia could be at the door, the accesses were not there much lower than with the CPU. And the same applied to the announcement of the DLSS-FSR competitor Intel Xe SS. Here, Intel will first have to provide deeper insights into the performance of its own gaming GPUs before the interest of the readers increases significantly.

The iPhone 13 is up and running in front of the door and a flood PC is saved

A look at the number of hits in the news makes it clear: The annual Apple iPhone event is coming up and there is great interest in the successor to the iPhone 12 in its four versions for the first time. The high number of hits via Google helped this content to make it to the top.

A flood PC is saved

Without it, the message would not have made it past the week's regular reader content: The message about the rescue operation started in the community for a high-end gaming PC that was destroyed in the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. Rightly so: sympathy and helpfulness in the forum have truly deserved this attention and kudos to all those involved.

Next week is Gamescom – really!

< p class = "p text-width"> Gamescom is next week. Two years ago that would have meant a visit to the exhibition halls in Cologne for the editorial team from Tuesday. But this year, too, the trade fair is still flat as an on-site event. Games and hardware innovations are to be expected in the context of the purely digitally planned games fair, albeit in a less concentrated form.

A game will be on in the coming days definitely on the program: Psychonauts 2, the continuation of the surprise success from the madhouse year 2005. In addition, the editors will look at a mobile Tiger Lake 8-core processor at the watt limit and the new generation of infotainment system from a sports car manufacturer. And further leaks on upcoming products from Apple or Intel are also to be expected.
