Rumor: 'Apple wants future iPad with sturdier titanium housing'

Aluminum is Apple's most widely used material for all of its products. The housings of iPhones, iPads and Macs are all or mostly made of this material. Apple has released several types of the Apple Watch, including stainless steel, ceramic and titanium. The latter could also be used on the iPad in the future, Digitimes now reports.

‘Apple considering titanium iPad’

Digitimes looks ahead in new report on the upcoming entry-level iPad, the iPad 2021. Like all current iPads, this model will be made of aluminum, but the website adds that Apple is also considering titanium. A housing made of titanium is not inconceivable, but at the moment it is still very expensive. Titanium is more expensive than aluminum, which is why the Apple Watch Edition is also more expensive than the stainless steel version.

Titanium is generally sturdier, but can sometimes be scratch-sensitive. You see this, for example, with the Apple Watch, where the titanium version has smaller scratches faster than the stainless steel version. But the extra strength can come in handy against bending. You may still remember the bendgate of the iPhone 6 and the iPad Pro 2018. The thinner design made it easier for some models to bend.

If Apple is indeed considering titanium on the iPad, the iPad Pro seems to be a suitable model for that. This is in itself a bit more expensive and with a titanium design, Apple can also distinguish this model from the similar-looking iPad Air. Earlier there was a rumor that Apple wants to make the iPhone of 2022 from titanium.
