Exclusively for the USA and Japan, Google has introduced the Pixel 5a as a new mid-range smartphone below the Pixel 5 (test), before the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are due later in the year. The Pixel 5a comes with a larger battery, larger display, faster processor and IP67 certification. It is priced at $ 449.
The Pixel 5a is available for pre-order now and should be available on August 26th. In terms of design, the smartphone is clearly part of the (still) current pixel family consisting of Pixel 4a (test), Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. Google adopts features such as the fingerprint sensor on the back in a small recess, the dual camera built into the rear top left and the display with punch-hole notch.

Compared to the Pixel 4a, the new generation brings important improvements, but Google is keeping a distance to the Pixel 5 in terms of features. New for the Pixel 5a is the 6.34 instead of 5.8 inch display with stretched Full HD resolution on one OLED panel with 60 Hz. The “Smooth Display” with 90 Hz is reserved for the Pixel 5. The same applies to wireless charging, although Google has significantly increased the battery of the Pixel 5a to 4,680 mAh. Including “Extreme Battery Saver”, runtimes of 48 hours are possible, says Google.
The Pixel 5a does not have “5G” in its name, but it still supports the current cellular standard via the Snapdragon 765G. With the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G, there was still the choice between two devices with different cellular support. In view of the better features of the Pixel 4a 5G, this model should rather be seen as the predecessor of the Pixel 5a. All Google smartphones below the Pixel 5 have 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage in common, which comes to 8 GB/128 GB.

Dual camera like all other pixel smartphones
Apart from the Pixel 4a, the cameras are also identical. On the back sits the well-known combination of 12 megapixel wide-angle and 16 megapixel ultra-wide-angle cameras, which support features such as night vision, Live HDR +, Cinematic Pan and portrait light. Although the sensors chosen by Google are already many years under their belt, the Pixel smartphones are still known for good photos.
IP67 protects the technology
For the first time, Google packs the technology for the middle class in an IP67-certified housing made of metal instead of plastic, which is only available in black, which can thus temporarily keep out dust and water. Pixel 4a and 4a 5G do not have this protection, while the Pixel 5 comes with IP68. In addition to USB Type C, the Pixel 5a also retains the 3.5 mm jack socket. Android 11 is used as the operating system, which can be quickly updated to complete Android 12. Google promises updates for at least three years, which is still very good, but can no longer keep up with Samsung's four years.
