AMD CPU market shares: gains in notebooks & servers, losses in desktops

AMD's market share for x86 CPUs is growing slowly but steadily. In addition to success in the notebook and server, you had to cut back on the desktop. Here Intel was able to regain market share through the sheer mass of CPUs, AMD with only four Zen 3 desktop CPUs and older models was not up to the superiority.

Intel strikes back on the desktop

It was already clear in the last quarterly reports from Intel: The company's own factories are the big trump card in the still booming times. The demand is so high, Intel recently explained, that even they cannot satisfy it and expect bottlenecks in the current third quarter. Nevertheless, this was enough so far to take significant market share in the desktop from AMD in the second quarter. AMD was also able to report record numbers of CPU sales for its part, but Intel was able to benefit more clearly, as AMD was almost unable to address some market segments such as entry-level. In the end, AMD therefore slipped to a market share in the desktop of 17.1 percent, Intel recovered to 82.9 percent.

win notebook, server and semi-custom

It looked better in the notebook and server, although the latter remains the tedious squirrel. With a market share of almost 9.5 percent, Epyc processors are still not in the double-digit range, if only after looking at the x86 CPUs. Despite the problems and delays at Intel, the server business remains a strong bank. But AMD knows that, they have been committed to this most inaccessible area for years, which is undoubtedly a marathon and not a sprint.

Notebooks show that good products are faster in other areas. Renoir laid the foundation stone there in 2020, and Cezanne is continuing this. Mercury Research suspects that AMD deliberately redirected some of its capacities to the notebook sector, to the detriment of the desktop. Because Intel couldn't do much to counter the portfolio in many areas. Nevertheless, there are still eight Intel notebooks for two delivered AMD solutions.

That AMD in the end despite 17.1, 9.5 and 20.0 percent at 22, 5 percent market share is due to the semi-custom division. Many millions of x86 chips for game consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X make an impact here.

Note: In the last two days, various media have picked up alleged figures for AMD – Market share from Mercury Research. However, these puzzled the editors because they did not fit together, not even with previous figures. Together with Mercury Research, it has now been possible to provide valid figures.
