In a meeting with members of the British Parliament on Tuesday, Andrew Pollard referred to the famous herd immunity as a “mythical” concept.
– The problem with this virus is that it is not measles. If 95 percent of the population were vaccinated against measles, the virus would not be transmitted to the population, Pollard said.
He continued:
– The Delta variant will continue to infect people who have been vaccinated. And that means that anyone who is still not vaccinated will ever encounter the virus – and we have nothing to completely stop that transmission.
The concept of herd immunity was a cornerstone of Sweden's so-called corona strategy at the beginning of the pandemic last year . The public health authority and various experts then appeared in the media on a daily basis and explained that herd immunity was imminent.
The existing vaccines have also not proved to be a reliable protection against infection. A recent study from Imperial College London shows that fully vaccinated people aged 18 to 64 only have about 49 percent lower risk of becoming infected compared to unvaccinated.
