Chamberlin Rock, as the stone was called, was named after Thomas Chamberlin, a famous geologist who was the university's rector between 1887 and 1892.

It was placed on campus in 1925. In a newspaper article the same year the word “negro head” was used to refer to the stone. It was common in the 1920s to use the term for large black stones.

This was taken by Africans at the university when, after the death of criminal George Floyd during a police intervention, they demanded that the stone be removed.

The university management proved to be quick to meet the requirement, and on Friday the stone was transported away. It happened at a cost of $ 50,000, writes the New York Post.
