The government has referred to the fact that it would be against the constitutional provisions on ministerial rule to intervene in individual cases and grant asylum to Afghan interpreters.

But now the Moderates demand that the government act immediately in the case.

The party's migration policy spokesperson Maria Malmer Stenergard and party colleague Pål Jonsson, who is chairman of the defense committee, have sent a letter to Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist (S) and Migration Minister Morgan Johansson (S).

In the letter, the M-tops demand that “Sweden provides protection for these interpreters and, if necessary, other local employees who have stood up for Sweden and who may now be in danger themselves.”

Maria Malmer Stenergard states to Expressen that the Moderates expects a response “within a few days”.

If the government does not answer or change its mind on the issue, M wants to try to force the government to act with the help of committee initiatives in the Social Insurance Committee.

In the draft the initiative calls for governments no prioritize the interpreters in Sweden's so-called refugee quota. According to the draft, the Swedish Armed Forces should also help Afghans with transport to a country where they can seek asylum in Sweden.

Peter Hultqvist and Morgan Johansson have not commented on the committee initiative, according to Expressen.
