iOS 14.8 in development
Developer Brendan Shanks discovered that a line has been added to the code of Xcode 13 beta 4 that refers to iOS 14.8. That line was only added in the fourth beta and Apple does not just do that. Both MacRumors and 9to5Mac have seen mentions of iOS 14.8 in their own website analytics. So it seems only a matter of time until the first beta is released.

At the time of writing (including the original iOS 14.0 release), Apple has released exactly 14 updates. iOS 14.7.1 is currently the most recent version. Apple has never released an .8 update before. The furthest Apple has come is iOS 13.7 and therefore iOS 14.7. For comparison, these are the updates from recent years:
- 2020: iOS 13.7 (September)
- 2019: iOS 12.4 (July)
- 2018 : iOS 11.4 (May)
- 2017: iOS 10.3 (March)
- 2016: iOS 9.3 (March)
In the months that followed, Apple did release minor point updates with bug fixes, but major .X updates were not forthcoming.
What brings iOS 14.8?
The big question now is what will be added in iOS 14.8, if the update is indeed will be released. Apple has previously announced that as of iOS 15, users are not required to update to be properly secured. Apple will release separate security updates, but there may also be an update with some small improvements for everyone who wants to stay on iOS 14.
