Zephyr: perforated mouse fights sweat with RGB fan

To cool sweaty hands, the Zephyr gaming mouse from the manufacturer Marsback uses an RGB fan inside its perforated chassis. The input device is to be financed via Kickstarter from July 22nd and otherwise relies on common high-end components, as PC Gamer first reported.

Mouse whistles from every crack

Gaming mice with a perforated back are no longer uncommon in 2020. Basically, pierced housing parts serve to reduce weight – light mice are the trend – but a better suitability for sweaty hands is mentioned again and again: The holes always allow fresh, cooling air to reach the palm of the hand. However, the mere possibility of air circulation usually does not have any actual practical effects. However, the Zephyr wants to force an air flow inside using a mini fan. The fact that only a fan with integrated RGB light-emitting diodes comes into question shouldn't come as a surprise at this point.

Users can choose between three different speeds: 4,000, 7,000 and 10,000 RPM are available. The high numbers suggest something bad about the volume, but Zephyr appeases: The fan is “super quiet” and can alternatively be switched off. The fan – like the total of 14 RGB lighting zones on the Zephyr – is supplied with power via the wrapped USB cable that is used to connect the mouse to the PC anyway. There is no additional battery, which also benefits the weight. This is a surprisingly low 68 grams.

Apart from the fan, a normal gaming mouse

Apart from these special features, the Zephyr relies on components common among high-end mice: For the sensor, PixArts with a maximum of 16,000 cpi and generally first-class PMW-3389 was chosen and the primary buttons are Omron's D2FC with a specified – and only relevant on paper – Lifetime of 50 million clicks. There are also four additional keys; one on the back, two on the left flank, and one on the bottom. Product photos show the mouse in black, white with red accents and pink with white accents.

Kickstarter campaign starts on July 22nd

Interested parties can pre-order or support the mouse from July 22, 2020 via Kickstarter. Marsback currently only reveals that the input device can be ordered with a discount of 50 percent, provided that potential buyers already subscribe to the e-mail newsletter and advance one euro. The amount to be paid later is then 79 euros – a total of 80 euros, which results in an actual price of 160 euros. The Zephyr wants to settle in the uppermost area of the high-end mice.

Zephyr Pro fights sweat with RGB fans and coating

After around a year, the Zephyr Pro is a successor in the starting blocks. Once again, PixArts PMW-3389 and Omron buttons are used. The weight of the chassis, which is still right-handed, symmetrical but differently shaped, now amounts to 69 grams. The flagship of the mouse has also been updated: The cooling RGB fan inside the Pro version is on the one hand more powerful and on the other hand is quieter at the same speed. In addition, the Zephyr Pro is protected from sweat by a water-repellent coating – the mouse is not only on the offensive against wet hands, but now also on the defensive. However, the input device does not have an IP protection class.

The Zephyr Pro is currently only available for pre-order via the manufacturer's website, with a price of around 60 US dollars. The recommended retail price for the mouse is around 100 US dollars, but it remains to be seen when the input device will be offered by third parties.
