Two become one: Microsoft is merging OneNote into one app

Microsoft has started to merge the two versions of the OneNote note-taking app into one application. Users can currently obtain the software in a UWP version from the Microsoft Store and as part of Office and Microsoft 365.

Just one Microsoft OneNote

Under the title “What's Coming to OneNote”, Microsoft reports in its in-house tech community about the plans to merge the two apps into a single central OneNote app. “Advances in Windows and Office will allow us to combine both apps,” Microsoft continued. The consolidated version of OneNote should be delivered directly with Windows.

This development is to be continued and completed over the next 12 months. Microsoft is planning to release the “new” OneNote app in the second half of 2022. Users who are currently using the version integrated in Windows 10 should receive an invitation to switch.

Existing notebooks should be able to be transferred to the new OneNote later without any problems.

For the time being exclusively for Windows

Nothing should change in the future for users of OneNote for macOS, iOS and Android. The new edition of the note software should initially only be available for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
