A special test alongside Oliver Solberg on a i20 Coup & eacute; WRC : it doesn't happen every day. A unique opportunity to live an extraordinary experience, to closely admire the talent of one of the new protagonists of the World Rally and the state of the art of the technology of the cars participating in the WRC. But also the opportunity to introduce you to the world of Hyundai Motorsport , which in recent years has dominated the world scene in rallies but also in track racing.

THE ADDED VALUE OF HYUNDAI

There are brands that have always been known for their sporting tradition, which boast a rich palmares of successes and for decades have offered cars with that DNA, which evoke the world of racing such as, for example, Mercedes, BMW and Audi. The world of the automobile is undoubtedly changing but c & rsquo; & egrave; even those who buy and love to drive cars with a certain temperament, perhaps with the pride of being behind the wheel of a model from which & egrave; derived from the one that won the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, the World Touring Championship or more.

But not everyone has this awareness when they drive their car. We are sure that those who drive a Hyundai know that the Korean manufacturer in recent years has won 2 Drivers' titles and one reserved for Teams in the WTCR , the World Cup for touring cars, with a car derived from the i30 N? And who among the customers of the brand is; aware of the 2 Constructors titles that Hyundai has won in the last two seasons of the WRC , the World Rally Championship, with a car developed on the i20 Coup & eacute ;?

< p> Maybe only those who buy Hyundai's high-performance models, such as i20 N , i30 N (which Luigi had tried) and Kona N , and a few other enthusiasts, despite the excellent work of those involved in marketing and communication: not & egrave; easy, there are brands that have been protagonists of Motorsport for 50 years and beyond, while the history of Hyundai Motorsport & egrave; rather young.

THE YOUNG AND INTENSE HISTORY OF HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT

The sports department, which has its headquarters in Alzenau in Germany, was born only at the end of 2012 and in a few years, however, it took giant steps. Responsible for all the activity; worldwide, including the WRC and the Corse Clienti , immediately sets ambitious goals: in fact, he decides to challenge the great protagonists of the World Rally.

After a first year spent building a structure suited to the new commitment, creating the right team and grinding thousands of test kilometers with the i20 WRC , already & agrave; in 2014, after their debut at the Monte Carlo Rally, they won their first podium in Mexico and their first win, with a double, in Germany. Since then & egrave; a crescendo that leads Hyundai to finish in second place among the manufacturers in 2016 and also the following year.

ANDREA ADAMO: THE RIGHT MAN AT THE RIGHT MOMENT

Meanwhile, at the end of 2015, Andrea Adamo joins Hyundai Motorsport: at the age of 14 he was already; decided that when he grew up he would become an engineer in the racing world and, when he had not yet finished his studies, already collaborated with Abarth. Then, after a period in the aerodynamics department of the DTM, the experience in the unforgettable Superturismo began. From l & igrave; in then his name will be & agrave; always linked to very successful projects: from the FIAT Group to N Technology, passing through the years of the WTCC with Honda Racing.

His first assignment in the Hyundai facility is; in the management of Customer Racing , in the development of an R5 class rally car for customers, for the various national and international championships. Then in addition to the rallies, it will begin; to take care of racing on the track with the TCR project , designed for the new era of touring car racing, based on the i30 N.

It immediately turns out to be a winning project: in 2018, in the inaugural season of the WTCR , Gabriele Tarquini at the wheel of the new i30 N TCR won the Drivers' title , with 5 victories; in addition, the title reserved for Teams & egrave; won by YMRacing, Hyundai's customer team.

After three years of great success with the Customer Racing department, Andrea Adamo becomes the Team Principal of Hyundai Motorsport GmbH: from January 2019 & egrave; responsible for all activities sports cars of the brand, from the WRC to the development of the i20 R5, i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR for customer teams in every corner of the world.

Sar & agrave; a case, but 2019 is; that of an amazing season: finally the first Constructors' title in the WRC arrives , after four world championship victories. Three bear the signature of Thierry Neuville, who finishes second in the league, and one is & egrave; of the expert Dani Sordo, in front of everyone in Sardinia. Without forgetting the contribution of Craig Breen, Andreas Mikkelsen, the nine-time S & eacute; bastien Loeb and all their navigators. and special tests.

Also on the track Hyundai & egrave; back on top of the world, with Norbert Michelisz who wins the WTCR Drivers' title with the i30 N TCR; the latter, together with the Veloster N TCR, allows customer teams to win 15 titles, 70 victories and over 170 podiums.

In 2020 Hyundai successfully defends the Constructors title in the WRC , with 3 victories (Monte Carlo, Estonia and Sardinia) 11 podiums and 54 specials: in the team now c & rsquo; & egrave; also the 2019 champion Ott T & auml; nak, who closes the season in third place ahead of Neuville.
The new affirmation of the team also bears the signature of Sordo, Breen and Loeb.

Despite a season made difficult by the global pandemic, the customer teams continue to demonstrate competitiveness; of i20 R5, i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR with titles and statements in every corner of the world.

This new season & egrave; game with the exact same determination but, above all for us & ograve; which concerns the World Rally, with more objectives; ambitious: in addition to reasserting themselves among the Manufacturers, they would like to win their first Drivers' title in the WRC.

HYUNDAI AT THE ALBA RALLY

To better prepare for the championship season, like a year ago, Hyundai Motorsport took part in Rally di Alba , which is part of the Italian WRC Championship : halfway through & agrave; June brought two i20 Coup & eacute; WRC entrusted to two official crews, that of the World Champion 2019 Ott T & auml; nak with Martin J & auml; rveoja, and that of the very young & quot; son of art & rdquo; Oliver Solberg paired with Aaron Johnston.

For both riders it was a good opportunity to grind kilometers on asphalt and for the team it was a good opportunity to work on set-ups and other fundamental adjustments for the rest of the world championship season.

To them and to the powerful WRC Plus a separate classification was reserved: the challenge is; was won by the Swedish Solberg, making his debut with the i20 Coup & eacute; WRC on the asphalt. For six special stages the race was dominated by T & auml; nak then the Estonian & egrave; was delayed by a puncture in a transfer that generated a penalty; of 2 & rsquo; 30 & rdquo;, forcing him to give the victory to the young teammate.

Well, what can I say is; that, having followed the race, apart from the bad luck of the 2019 champion, Solberg had quickly found the feeling with the car on the asphalt and quickly began to suffer less important delays towards the most important; experienced teammate.

BY CAR WITH OLIVER SOLBERG

Class 2001, the first years runs in crosskart and in 2012 he won the Norwegian championship before moving up to a higher class and collecting other titles for four seasons.

At the age of 15 he moved to rallies and participated in the Latvian championship, where he immediately obtained two victories in a Peugeot 208 R2.
From there; onwards & egrave; a crescendo, between new challenges and as many successes: from the rallycross , with victories and title in 2018 in the RallyX Nordic series, to the Latvian/Estonian/Baltic rally championship, where the following year he drives for the first once a Volkswagen Polo GTI of the R5 class and immediately won five class victories.

The big leap takes place in 2019 : he makes his debut in the WRC in Great Britain in the WRC2 class, and then faces a full season in the WRC in 2020. Dominates and wins in the WRC3 in Estonia, signing his first world championship victory and, if that weren't enough, he continues with great performances also in the ERC , the European rally championship, where secures the title ERC1 junior . The present is; a two-year contract with Hyundai Motorsport as Junior Driver to tackle an entire WRC2 campaign in 2021 in a i20 R5 . But & egrave; just the beginning …

And how do you guide? Eh, watch the video that makes the idea a lot …

WRC GOES HYBRID

On that occasion with Andrea Adamo, Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal, we also took stock of the 2021 season of the WRC , on the eve of the Rally Safari, and also of the new engagement in the ETCR , the championship for electric touring cars that debuted in Vallelunga.
But above all it anticipated next season, when in the WRC it will change & agrave; everything will be born the new hybrid era : the cars will be called Rally1 , will have plug-in hybrid powertrains and will use eco-sustainable fuels.

This experience is; it was fun for sure, but also useful to understand at what level it is; technology has arrived in Motorsport, which is expressed in performances that are nothing short of incredible but, above all, to introduce you to the DNA of the Korean brand : which uses racing as an extraordinary test bed to test winning technologies and then they end up in everyday cars.

& Egrave; it is right that when you drive your Hyundai you know that you are behind the wheel of cars made by those who & egrave; at the top of Motorsport and has a very specific vision of the future: that & egrave; also that, as I said at the opening of the video, of IONIQ 5 and the cars we will drive in the next few years.
