Air transport, 2020 annus horribilis: almost 3 billion passengers lost

The annual report of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was expected without particular enthusiasm, the numbers are indeed merciless and leave no room to many interpretations: 2020 & egrave; It was the worst year in the history of world aviation , at least since 1950 when the surveys began. On balance there is talk of a decrease of 2.7 billion passengers in just 12 months (-60.2%), or 1.8 billion in 2020 against 4.5 billion in 2019 and revenues at the bottom of the well. The peak in April 2020 with 66% of the world's air transport fleet blocked on the ground by restrictions and tight borders.

Economically disastrous, the pandemic caused a drop in passenger revenues of $ 189 billion (-69%) and net losses of $ 126.4 billion (in practice $ 71.7 lost per passenger). To suffer the most, as we know, were the long routes that connect distant countries: in fact, in the face of an average drop in the demand for air travel (calculated in RPK, or the number of paying passengers transported multiplied by the number of kilometers flown) of 65.9% it & egrave; reached the peak of -75.6% for international passengers and -48.8% for domestic passengers.

To lose more & ugrave; & egrave; was the Middle East with a decline in RPK of 71.5% compared to 2019, followed by Europe (-69.7%) and Africa (-68.5%). Direct consequence of the loss of jobs, the IATA even speaks of 1 million people left without employment worldwide.

The only glimmer of light in this horrible 2020 & egrave; arrived by freight transport , both for direct necessity; mobility health devices (masks, respirators, vaccines) and other related factors. Despite the lack of space for goods in the holds of passenger aircraft left on the ground, it is & egrave; recorded a 7% higher load rate on cargo flights. Growth that is still continuing: according to a recent report by the same international agency (link in VIA), the air cargo market is; increased in June by 9.9% compared to the same month of 2019 (2020 is not considered given the distorted numbers by Covid-19).

Forecasts for 2021 are not like that after all; rosy. Although an increase in traffic is taken for granted, the IATA no longer foresees; of 2.4 billion passengers by the end of the year, with total revenues of approximately $ 458 billion, well below the $ 838 billion of 2019 but above the “ suns '' $ 372 billion generated in 2020. Who knows & agrave; that in the coming years it is not the new sectors that will help in the recovery, there are in fact numerous ambitious projects, from supersonic planes to flying electric taxis.
