Speedport Pro Plus: Telekom brings gaming routers with lighting

Deutsche Telekom has presented a limited gaming edition of the Speedport Pro Plus router. It relies on “gaming WLAN” with Wi-Fi 6 and 12 WLAN antennas, a ping test and ambient light. Cumulatively, like the normal version of the Speedport Pro Plus, the router achieves speeds of up to 9,700 Mbit/s via WLAN.

For the limited gaming edition, Telekom says it has equipped the router with additional features, including the WiFi. Because the gaming WiFi has its own SSID, so that data is only transmitted via the router's internal WiFi module and not any connected mesh devices. In addition, devices registered with this WLAN have priority over devices in the regular WLAN that is set up secondary by the router. For example, gaming PCs that run via this WLAN should be preferred to streaming devices in the second WLAN. The 5 GHz band and optionally Wi-Fi 5 (IEEE802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE802.11ax) are used for the “gaming WLAN”, which must be supported by the end devices.

The configuration that is used in the gaming edition of the Speedport Pro Plus for the “Gaming WLAN” can, however, also be implemented by the user with any normal Speedport Pro Plus, but only has to be configured himself. Because the WLAN implementation with 8 × 8 MU-MIMO with up to 8,600 Mbit/s at 5 GHz and 4 × 4 MU-MIMO with up to 1,100 Mbit/s at 2.4 GHz has nothing compared to the normal model changed – no further band was added.

Five modes and three colors for the lighting

Telekom has also understood that lighting should not be missing in a gaming product and is equipping the gaming edition with an ambient light. The router can shine in five different light modes in the three colors green, blue and yellow and should optically match other components with RGB lighting on the player's desk. The router does not light up on the side either, as in the picture.

Ping test to the Telekom server

The ping test integrated in the special edition measures the latency between the router and a Telekom server. It should be possible to reliably check at any time whether the connection is working properly and quickly. In everyday life, the function advertised by marketing of being able to charge the controller via the two USB 3.0 ports is likely to be less relevant.

Technology identical to Speedport Pro Plus

In addition to ADSL, VDSL, VDSL vectoring and VDSL supervectoring (35b), the router also supports connections via fiber optics, for which an additional fiber optic modem is required , and as a hybrid router LTE connections according to Cat 6 with double carrier aggregation on the frequencies 700, 800, 900, 1,500, 1,800 and 2,600 MHz. Dimensions and weight of 137 × 242 × 137 mm (W × H × D) and 1.8 kg are identical to the normal version. In addition to WLAN, there are also three gigabit LAN connections available.

From now on for 400 euros

The limited gaming edition of the Speedport Pro Plus is available from Telekom from today at a purchase price of 399.99 euros. This means that it is just as expensive in the Telekom shop as the normal Speedport Pro Plus.
