AMD Ryzen 5000G: iGPU in the test: Zen 3 accelerates the APU in gaming

AMD has also increased the gaming performance at Cezanne, although neither RDNA nor RDNA 2, but Vega, is still used. But not only the iGPU clock has increased, Zen 3 also helps. In the test, the Ryzen 5 5600G and Ryzen 7 5700G only made moderate gains, but they are still the undisputed leader in the desktop PC.

Can you play with AMD Ryzen 5000G?

With Zen 3, the Cezanne APUs have received a major update on the processor side, like the classic CPU test of Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G shows. But the integrated GPU has also gotten better, according to AMD, but at least based on the specifications it has only been upgraded slightly – for example, it remains with Vega.

How well it can be played with the two new APUs is still an exciting question, because most potential buyers will certainly want to do without a separate graphics card.

This test shows in six different titles, which is possible in Full HD with an iGPU. In comparison, the APUs not only have to prove themselves against the predecessor, but also against Intel's Xe GPU and discrete graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia.

Ryzen 5600G and 5700G receive the “Renoir update”

AMD has more or less left out the Ryzen 4000G generation based on Renoir on the desktop PC. At least for retail customers, the APUs could only be bought indirectly. With Cezanne, there are ultimately the GPU updates that Renoir already had (especially in the notebook), Picasso and thus Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 3400G, however, not.

Accordingly, the Ryzen 5 5700G with 8 compute units and thus 512 FP32-ALUs offers the same number of CUs as the Ryzen 7 Pro 4750G (Renoir), but just 3 CUs less than the Ryzen 5 3400G, which has 11. However, there is more than compensation through massively increased clock rates. The Vega GPU on the new APU flagship works with a maximum of 2.0 GHz, while the GPU in the Ryzen 5 3400G only works with 1.4 GHz.

The GPU in the Ryzen 5 5600G is slightly slimmed down. One compute unit is switched off, 7 CUs and thus 448 ALUs remain active. The clock rate is also a bit lower at up to 1.9 GHz. Apart from that, there are no differences between the larger and the smaller iGPU on the Ryzen 5000G APUs.

Test system and games

In all subsequent tests, the Ryzen 5 5600G, Ryzen 5700G and all other products from AMD, Intel and Nvidia were tested with the factory settings, unless otherwise stated. The Asus ROG Strix B550-E with BIOS version “2404” (AGESA V2 PI 1.2.0.3 Patch B) was used as the mainboard for the AMD APUs, and the MSI Z590 ACE with the BIOS version for the Intel CPU “7D04v12”. In all cases, 2 × 8 GB were used as memory, the clock is selected according to the manufacturer's specifications, the timings are independently of this 14-14-14-32-1T. The Adrenalin 21.6.2 (this is the launch driver of the APUs), the GeForce 471.41 or the Intel 30.0.100.9684 are installed as GPU drivers. Windows 10 21H1 and all updates acted as the operating system.

Since AAA games are rarely played with integrated graphics units, only two are represented in the course with F1 2021 and Resident Evil Village. Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege and Valorant serve as multiplayer titles with a focus on esports, competitive gaming and battle royale, while Lego Builder's Journey has to serve as a casual game. The resolution is 1,920 × 1,080, only in Lego Builder's Journey was 3840 × 2,160 selected in the selected preset due to low requirements. The levels of detail have been adapted to the GPU performance, more detailed information is shown in the following table.

Graphic details resolution F1 2021 ultra-low preset 1,920 × 1,080 Fortnite low-preset, DX11 1,920 × 1,080 Lego Builder's Journey ultra-low-preset 3,840 × 2,160 Rainbow Six Siege low-preset, 100% resolution, FXAA 1,920 × 1,080 Resident Evil Village performance- Prioritize preset 1,920 × 1,080 Valorant Maximum details, FXAA 1,920 × 1,080

Discrete graphics cards also take part in the test, and these are exclusively older and slower models. With the GeForce GT 1030 and the Radeon RX 550 (test), even absolute entry-level solutions are represented, while the Radeon RX 460, which is also used, is a good bit higher. The graphics card was not more than the lower middle class when it was launched in 2016.

The clock behavior of the Cezanne APUs

Modern graphics chips, above all GPUs based on RDNA 2, no longer have any fixed clock rates of any kind. These are now completely dynamic and depend on the power consumption, temperature and load. However, this does not apply to the Cezanne APUs, because with these the motto simply applies: always full throttle.

Accordingly, the GPU in the Ryzen 7 5700G clocks consistently with 2,000 MHz, that in the Ryzen 5 5600G always with 1,900 MHz – only lower frequencies are present in idle mode or during partial load. In games, on the other hand, there is the full clock as with a completely straight line.

Technically, the GPU in the APUs would also be able to generate dynamic clock rates under load to use. AMD's Vega 10 GPU in the Radeon RX Vega 56/64 makes this known. Apparently, with the APUs, it is not a problem in terms of temperature or energy to run the graphics unit with the maximum clock. And that's why this behavior was probably decided, even if it automatically waived the maximum possible performance of the silicon.
