According to Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi is the largest smartphone provider in Europe for the first time. With 12.7 million smartphones sold, the company was able to push itself ahead of Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Realme and others. From a global perspective, Xiaomi is steadily getting closer to the first position, as current IDC figures show.

A whopping 67.1 percent increase compared to the second quarter of 2020 brought Xiaomi to the top of the Strategy Analytics charts in the period from April to June 2021. For the first time in the company's history, it is the largest smartphone supplier in Europe and takes up more than a quarter of the entire market. 700,000 more smartphones delivered compared to Samsung ensured the new top position. Xiaomi was particularly strong in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy.

Samsung does not benefit from Huawei

Samsung ranks second in Europe with 12 million smartphones shipped and a market share of 24 percent. That stands for a decrease of 7 percent in the number of units and counteracts the general development of the European market, which is flourishing again after the declines in 2020. The analysts justify this with strong competition in the high-end segment from Apple and in the low-end segment from Chinese providers as well as the fact that Samsung did not take the opportunity to benefit from Huawei's decline. Things are going well for Samsung, especially with the Galaxy A smartphones with 5G support.

The success of the iPhone has recently underpinned Apple's good quarterly figures. According to Strategy Analytics, Apple sold 9.6 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2021, taking 19.2 percent of the market.

Realme is growing 1,800 percent

Oppo has sold 2.8 million smartphones with a market share of 5.6 percent. Overall, it is still significantly smaller than the top 3, but Oppo scores above all for its impressive growth rate of 180 percent. With 1,800 percent, the BBK cheap brand Realme shows how much it has grown in a short period of time. 1.9 million smartphones represent a market share of 3.8 percent.

Other brands give up market share

All other providers, which now also include Huawei, but also brands such as Honor, LG, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, Sony, TCL, Wiko and ZTE count, have lost a total of 20.1 percent compared to the previous year and with 11.1 million smartphones still have a market share of 22.2 percent.

IDC sees Xiaomi close behind Samsung globally

Apart from the figures for Europe, figures published by IDC at the end of July also suggest that from a global perspective, Xiaomi will soon be Samsung could overtake and take first place. With almost 87 percent growth compared to the previous year, Xiaomi comes to 53.1 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2021 and thus lands behind Samsung with 59 million devices, which represents an increase of 9.3 percent. Apple, Oppo, Vivo and other brands follow on the other places.
