Laurel Hubbard competed in the +87-kilo class for women at the Olympics in Tokyo but failed on Monday with three lifts.
This means that his chances of getting a medal have been dashed.
The now 43-year-old Laurel Hubbard, who was born Gavin Hubbard, legally changed gender at the age of 35 and then started competing in weightlifting as a woman. In 2017, he competed in the World Cup and won silver in his superweight class.
His participation in the ladies' competitions has attracted criticism. Some have considered it unfair for women to have to compete with men, while others have referred to the equal value of all.
