IKEA has launched several smart products that have multiple functions in recent years. The most famous example is the SYMFONISK line, a collaboration with Sonos. The latest is the IKEA SYMFONISK picture frame, a painting in which a speaker is incorporated. Now the Swedish store has again come up with a smart product that doubles as a piece of furniture: the STARKVIND air purifier.
IKEA STARKVIND smart air purifier is a side table
IKEA already had the FORNUFITG air purifier, but it was not smart and you could only make it smart with a separate plug. So from October, a smart air purifier will be added. The IKEA STARKVIND comes in two variants. There will be a separate air purifier in several colors, but the most interesting is the side table variant. This model is in fact a wooden side table, with the air purifier hidden under the table top.
The STARKVIND has five different fan settings and an automatic mode. This adjusts the power of the air purifier based on the amount of PM2.5 particles in the room. These particles can affect the air quality in your home. There are three filters in it. The large filter captures hair and dust, while the smaller filter removes those small PM2.5 particles and pollen. Certain gases and VOCs are also captured by the air purifier. Cooking odors or smoke smell should be a lot less. The STARKVIND is suitable for rooms up to 20 square meters and captures 99.5% of the particles.
The STARKVIND can be operated by itself via the button on the side, but by connecting it to the IKEA TRADFRI hub can also be controlled with your iPhone via the IKEA Home Smart app. You can set schedules and read the air quality in the house via the app. As far as we know, there is no support for other smart home systems, such as HomeKit or the Google Assistant.
The IKEA STARKVIND will be rolled out from October, but it is not clear whether it will be available immediately in the Netherlands. The side table variant (dark or light color) costs $189, while the separate version (black or white) should cost $129.
