Weekly review and outlook: nostalgia calls

A Nokia 6310 awakened many memories this week and topped the chart in no time. And that was not the only old thing, with the reports an overview of the classics was right at the front, which with the heading “Your best games of all time” had admittedly an easy game.

More than 6,000 votes for over 300 games and yet only one ranking list. In the comments on issue 88 of C: B_retro , ComputerBase readers voted for their very own best and most popular games of all time. All relevant platforms from different gaming epochs made it into the top 100.

Place 2 was also surprisingly strong. The “Linux Basics” mini-series provides basic knowledge on the most varied of Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux operating system kernel in a simple and understandable manner. It starts with the well-known large distributions, small and large derivatives and their numerous desktops and window managers.

20 years after the original market launch, Nokia is releasing the classic 6310 as a reinterpreted feature phone. The pure 2G cell phone is due to go live at the beginning of August at a non-binding price of 63.10 euros. The new Nokia 6310 takes up the design of the old model in certain basic features, such as the bezel of the screen or the arrangement of the buttons, but ultimately has little in common with it.

The upcoming Windows 11 was also an issue this week. As Microsoft once again expressly underlined to the community in a Q&A session, only compatible systems will receive an update to Windows 11. Neither a workaround nor changed group policies can change anything. This should keep systems “more secure and productive”. That sparked discussion.

Outlook

In the coming week, AMD's new APUs AMD Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G will be available released a few weeks ago after their announcement. These are the first official retail desktop solutions after the Ryzen 5 3400G – the Renoir series was not released for the market and therefore only available indirectly.

But Something is also happening on the storage front: Crucial's first PCIe 4.0 SSD is coming up.
