Since the start of sales in November 2020, Sony has sold 10 million PlayStation 5 (test). No console in the series has sold faster in the past, even if the PS4 isn't far behind. It should not be a coincidence that Sony publishes this news parallel to Microsoft's quarterly figures.

Faster than the PlayStation 4

The 10 million mark is said to have fallen on July 18, after just over eight months of availability in stores. In the case of the PlayStation 4, which was also released in the USA and Europe in November (November 15 and 29, 2013, respectively), but in Japan only in February of the following year, the 10 million mark was not reached until a good half a month later. The PlayStation 5, however, was released worldwide in November 2020 (Japan and USA on November 12th, Europe on November 19th).

4.5 of the 10 million consoles were shipped in 2020, by April 28, 2021 and thus in fiscal year 2020, according to Sony, 7.8 million – the PlayStation 4 was 7.6 million eight years earlier at the same time.

Pushing through supply challenges and a global pandemic, we're proud to have delivered a transformational gaming experience that is captivating players around the world. Everyone at SIE put their all into making the PlayStation experience better than ever. I'd like to call out a couple of teams who made especially important contributions.

Sony

For the current financial year 2021, which ends on April 29, 2021 Sony has set itself the goal of maintaining the lead over the previous generation: The PlayStation 4 had sold 14.8 million times in the same period, the PlayStation 5 is said to be higher.

Microsoft owes official figures

Microsoft traditionally does not publish sales figures for the Xbox, but it did so when the quarterly figures were announced on Tuesday talked about the best-selling generation to date. Analysts assume 6.5 million copies have been sold to date. The Xbox Series X | S has been available globally since November 10, 2020.
