Through his company Husdoktorn, Farshid Sistani tricked people into paying for travel certificates even though the samples were never sent for analysis.

Gothenburg District Court now sentences the 35-year-old doctor for seven cases of gross fraud and grossly false testimony as well as forgery of documents on two occasions. The crimes were committed in December 2020 and January 2021.

Farshid Sistani denied all wrongdoing. During the trial, extensive written evidence was presented and several people were heard, including staff from the laboratory who allegedly tested the samples and provided test results.

The district court considers that it has investigated that the laboratory has not received or analyzed any samples from the doctor or his company. Nor have they provided any test results, either in writing or orally. The court therefore considers that the allegations of fraud are substantiated in all cases and seriously considers that the doctor used the ongoing pandemic for his own gain. The circumstances that the issuance of the certificates took place systematically and that the acts could have contributed to an increased spread of covid-19 means that they have a higher penalty value than what normally applies to the type of crime.

Finally, the district court considers that the charges in two cases of forgery are proven. In one case, Farshid Sistani has, among other things, indicated a fictional doctor as the issuer and in one case, he has changed a test answer that concerned another patient.

The district court considers that the total penalty for the crime clearly exceeds imprisonment in 1 year. In determining the sanction, however, the district court has taken mitigation into account that the doctor “should lose his medical ID as a result of the verdict”.

Farshid Sistani must also pay damages to the six plaintiffs who paid for false travel certificates.
