The Nokia XR20 is an outdoor smartphone that is highly resistant to water, dust, drops and extreme temperatures. Nokia doesn't just refer to the hardware as durability, but also to software and security. With good results in the test, the Nokia XR20 is recommended for everyone who does not buy new items every year.

< li> Conclusion
The Nokia XR20 not only wants to be an above-average stable outdoor smartphone and therefore designed for a long service life, but also to extend this service life to the area of software, as Nokia guarantees three years of Android upgrades and four years of security updates – even Google only guarantees three years Years with their own pixel smartphones. In addition, Nokia guarantees a one-time free replacement of the display for one year if it should break despite IP68 and MIL-STD-810H certification, and an extended three-year warranty.
The Nokia XR20 can be pre-ordered from today in the two colors “Ultra Blue” and “Granite Gray” in two versions. It will not be available until the end of August or the beginning of September. It is optionally available with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage for 499 euros or with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage for 579 euros. The latter variant in blue is used in the test. In addition to the smartphone, the scope of delivery includes a SIM card needle and a USB-A to USB charging cable, Nokia does not have a power adapter.
The technology and design of the Nokia XR20
IP68- and MIL-STD-810H certification
Like the smartphones from CAT, the XCover series from Samsung, individual models from Gigaset such as the GX290 (test) and the new Motorola Defy, the Nokia XR20 has a robust exterior that can cope with all situations, including water, dust and falls and high and low temperatures are not affected. The XR20 is certified to IP68 for this purpose – it is dustproof and can be submerged at a depth of 1.5 meters for 1 hour. According to MIL-STD-810H, it can withstand drops from 1.5 meters, Nokia also certifies that it can withstand drops from 1.8 meters onto concrete, according to its own tests. If the Nokia XR20 gets dirty, the user can simply clean it with soap and water. In addition, the XR20 withstands temperatures from 55 ° to -22 ° Celsius, salt fog, disinfectants and vibrations.

The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and can also be operated with wet hands and gloves. In addition, the glass does not lie on when the Nokia XR20 is placed on the front, as “the protective cover” protrudes slightly over the edge and thus protects the display from scratches “id =” section_optisch_ein_smartphone_mit_schutzhuelle “> Optically a smartphone with a protective cover
From the outside, the high protection class of the Nokia XR20 cannot be seen immediately, because optically it could also be an ordinary smartphone with a protective cover. Gone are the days when an outdoor smartphone was synonymous with a clunky design and extremely thick frame. With a weight of 248 grams, the Nokia XR20's ambitions are more obvious and the dimensions, at 81.5 × 10.6 × 171.64 mm, are especially thicker than many current models class = “text-asset text-asset – with-border-bottom text-width”>

6,67- Inch display in 20: 9 with FHD +
The display of the XR20 measures 6.67 inches diagonally and has an aspect ratio of 20: 9. In conjunction with the FHD + resolution of 1,080 × 2,400 pixels, this results in a pixel density of 395 ppi. Nokia specifies the brightness as 550 cd/m². The refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz. There is a hole in the upper area of the display for the front camera. Visually, the area directly around the recess is a little bit black, which is visible when the screen content is white.
Nokia XR20
As the SoC, Nokia uses the smallest Qualcomm Snapdragon with 5G support, the Snapdragon 480 5G. The SoC is based on Samsung's 8 nm production (8LPP) and a 2 + 6 configuration for the CPU cores. The two fast main cores are Kryo 460 Gold based on the Cortex-A76, the six efficiency cores are Kryo 460 Silver based on the Cortex-A55. The two performance cores can clock up to 2.0 GHz, the efficiency cores up to 1.8 GHz.
The Adreno 619 is used as a GPU Use that clocks at 650 MHz. Qualcomm promises a performance increase of at least 100 percent for both the CPU and the GPU compared to the Snapdragon 460.
5G modem of the Snapdragon 690
The Snapdragon 480 integrates the Snapdragon X51 modem presented with the Snapdragon 690 in June 2020, which is a descendant of the Snapdragon X52 from the Snapdragon 750G, 765 (G) and 768 (G) as an all-in-one solution that meets all current cellular standards handles from 2G to 5G. Although the name “X51” is identical to the implementation in the Snapdragon 690, the modem in the Snapdragon 480 does not quite achieve the same values: Qualcomm puts the maximum 5G downlink at the same 2.5 Gbit/s, but with LTE it is 800 Mbit/s instead of 1.2 Gbit/s. And in the 5G uplink, the chip is specified with 660 instead of 900 Mbit/s, while the LTE uplink is 210 Mbit/s in each case.

Dual SIM and expandable memory
The internal memory of the test model is 128 GB. Both this and the variant with 64 GB of internal memory can be expanded with additional storage space via a microSD card. The microSD card shares its space in the smartphone with the second SIM card slot, so that the user may have to choose between the memory expansion or a second SIM. The LPDDR4X working memory in the test model is 6 GB, in the variant with 64 GB internal memory the working memory is also reduced to 4 GB.

Lateral fingerprint sensor and Google Assistant
Nokia has integrated the fingerprint sensor into the on/off switch on the right side of the housing so that it can be easily used with the thumb – alternatively, the front camera can also be used for biometric unlocking via face recognition. The two buttons for controlling the volume are located above the fingerprint sensor. At these points, as on the left-hand side, the metal frame emerges, which is protected by plastic (“3D nanotextured polymer”) on the back and the other sides. A button for the Google Assistant is located on the right side of the frame, while the 3.5 mm audio and USB-C ports are on the underside. On the other hand, there is a programmable emergency call button and the SIM card tray, which is protected with a rubber against the ingress of water and dust. The other connections dispense with covers and caps, which makes them much easier to use in everyday life.

WLAN, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and GPS
In addition to Bluetooth 5.1 and the support of the aptX Adaptive audio codec, the Nokia XR20 also offers NFC to recognize the corresponding tags and, for example, to connect more easily to appropriately equipped headphones. WLAN is supported according to the 802.11 b/g/n/ac (Wi-Fi 5) standards at both 2.4 and 5 GHz, and the Nokia XR20 is also equipped for 802.11ax, alias Wi-Fi 6 (ax-ready). With A-GPS, Galileo, A-GLONASS, Beidou, QZSS and NavIC, the XR20 also offers complete coverage of the location standards.
Fast charging and wireless charging
The Nokia XR20 supports fast charging with up to 18 watts via the 5 Gbit/s fast USB-C port. In addition, it can also be charged wirelessly according to the Qi standard with up to 15 watts. The capacity of the built-in battery is 4,630 mAh and Nokia promises a battery life of two days with normal use.
The display under the magnifying glass
The display of the Nokia XR20 shines in the test with a maximum of 592 cd/m² with the full-surface display of white and is therefore brighter than the 550 cd/m² advertised by Nokia. Black glows at maximum brightness with 0.39 cd/m². The contrast of the XR20 is 1,518: 1, a typical, good value for smartphones. With a color temperature of 8150 Kelvin, the display is set too cool in the delivery state.

The minimum brightness of the display is 2.9 cd/m² – also a good, unproblematic value. The 200 cd/m² used for the battery measurements are achieved with the Nokia XR20 with a display brightness of 56 percent. The brightness control is therefore not evenly distributed, because otherwise 200 cd/m² would correspond to a brightness setting of around 34 percent of the maximum brightness of 592 cd/m².
Dual camera with dual flash
For photos, the Nokia XR20 relies on a 48-megapixel main camera with f/1.8 aperture from Zeiss, with a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.4 aperture aside stands. It offers a field of view of 123 degrees. The front camera offers 8 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture.

Photos can be saved with either 48 or 12 megapixels, with the full resolution delivering the sharper result in the test. The cameras of the Nokia CR20 deliver quite good images, but the color matching is not always entirely correct. The color of the phlox & apos; hits the iPhone XS best, because the flowers are deep purple and not as faded as in the pictures of the Nokia XR20. The green of the trees is sometimes better for the iPhone, especially the ROG Phone 5, while the Nokia XR20 mostly has a good color rendering.

In poor lighting conditions with warm white artificial light, the Nokia XR20 not only does not compensate for this, it also significantly intensifies the yellow cast. In addition, the image is less sharp than that of the comparison models used.
